    Description

    The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Crew Leader to supervise ground maintenance activities. This position performs and supervises the daily tasks, various equipment maintenance, and activities of the crew . The Crew Leader will work with our Parks and Forestry Operations to maintain 2700 acres of turf and landscape beds on a regular basis.

    Departmental Starting Salary: $41,775

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions include but are not limited:

    + Supervises ground maintenance activities by scheduling, training and assigning duties, taking service requests, completing time sheets, keeping work records and logs, conducting performance evaluations and conducting daily team meetings.

    + Supervises activities related to funeral services by monitoring the performance of employees and conducting team meetings.

    + Monitors equipment maintenance, packing of graves, gasoline issued, pesticide logs, completed work orders, inventory, personnel information and program effectiveness by keeping logs and records.

    + Manages the maintenance of grounds and landscaping by seeding, fertilizing, spraying, mowing, trimming, installing sod, applying herbicides, preparing and planting flowers, shrub beds and trees, pulling weeds, watering plants, trimming trees and shrubs, raking leaves and picking up litter.

    + Performs and supervises the daily maintenance of equipment by changing blades, lubricating equipment and performing minor repairs and preventative maintenance.

    + Supervises emergency response by clearing streets, walkways, assisting emergency personnel and being on call to respond to emergencies.

    Education/Experience

    Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

     

    One years' experience in groundskeeper and supervisory or lead experience.

    Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):

    + Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Pesticide Applications Certificate 3A & 3B

    + Commercial Class B Driver’s License

     

    Additional Information & Requirements

     

    Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509

     

    Work Hours: Monday – Friday 6:30am to 3:00pm

     

    Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

     

    + Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

    + Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

    + Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

    + Retirement

     

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
