Polaris Industries, Inc. seeks Engineer, Specialist - Plastics in Wyoming, MN.
Design bodywork sub-systems from concept to production, with an emphasis on plastic part design. Support the technical design, development, and validation of sub-systems using systems engineering principles to convert customer needs into sub-system specifications and define key attributes related to the sub-systems. Work closely with industrial design, systems engineers, program teams, vehicle architects, validation engineering, sourcing, and manufacturing teams with the goal of delivering world class motorcycles which meet and exceed customer expectations. Lead design efforts for motorcycle bodywork including fairings, saddlebags, seats, fenders, trunks, lighting interfaces and various other subsystems. Support all design related component styling, purchasing, and manufacturing issues with emphasis on quality, reliability, timely delivery, and cost. Utilize 3D modelling software to design plastic body components. Establish a reasonable project development schedule from concept to production implementation in line with overall business requirements. Determine ideal component manufacturing route to ensure overall design, performance, and cost conformance. Analyze existing and new designs to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities. Determine nature and type of CAD models, detail drawings, and analysis required to support the above and create / supervise the release through the release cycle. Prepare preliminary sketches and/ or schematic diagrams and / or presentations to aid in the understanding and solution of engineering problems. Lead and participate in design reviews on projects to ensure adequate input and involvement from all the stakeholders. Ensure proper interactions are maintained to other systems. Participate at various stages throughout the vehicle development process. Analyze field problems and recommend possible solutions. Perform other miscellaneous project related assignments. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Other tasks and duties as assigned. Hybrid work schedule available with manager approval. Must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the Polaris office based in Wyoming, MN.
Time spent traveling is minimal, likely 5% or less of time on an annual basis. Domestic travel is required to support pre-production product builds and visit vendors in support of development work. It may be possible that travel is required to interact with customers.
**Position Qualifications:** Requires a Bachelor’s, or foreign equivalent, degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related engineering field plus 3 years of professional work experience in powersports, automotive, agricultural, or consumer product design.
Additionally, a qualified applicant must have professional experience with:
Experience in surfacing and solid modeling using a CAD modeling package, such as PTC Creo to 3D model components and assemblies, and to manipulate the vehicle assemblies and generate 2D prints. Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and dimensional tolerance stack-ups to calculate expected component and assembly variation, and to ensure assemblies meet dimensional and aesthetic fit-and-finish requirements of the vehicle by documenting allowable part variation and measurement approaches. Experience generating and participating in FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to review applicable subsystems, and aide in identifying potential failure modes both from a design (DFMEA) and a process (PFMEA) perspective to ensure a safe, consistent and high-quality product can be produced. Experience using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) in order to design parts which won’t fail during validation testing or by the consumers usage by predicting loading induced stresses, stain displacements, and modal harmonics of components and assemblies. Experience interpreting MFA (mold flow analysis) results in order to collaboratively refine the injection mold tooling gating and component part geometry to predict and correct for any potential defects as a result of molding, which would result in unacceptable parts before producing any physical tooling. Must have a foundational knowledge of injection molding tool design and its impact on molded component design to meet cosmetic, dimensional and cost expectations Experience with plastic resin families (amorphous and semi-crystalline resins) to specify appropriate resins based on the conditions and environment for which the parts and/or assemblies must survive. Experience designing components for diecasting, stampings, and weldments in order to have design ownership for all aspects associated with any given bodywork subsystem
Special requirement: mandatory drug testing and background checks
The pay range for Minnesota is $87,381 to $99,000 per year. Individual salaries are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography.
Must also have authority to work permanently in the U.S.
