Exciting opportunity within the Hazardous Materials Response Division! Utilize your skills to help fulfill the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services’ fire and life safety mission! Working as the Director of Hazardous Materials Response Division provides an exciting opportunity to lead a fast-paced and energetic team of dedicated fire safety professionals and six regional response teams. The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of hazardous materials, the ability to interact with municipal, state and federal agencies. Experience in managing complex emergencies utilizing state and federal emergency plans is also required. A strong administrative background dealing with budgets, writing and managing grants are key skills for this position. The Department of Fire Services is located in idyllic Stow, MA. The campus is adjacent to a wildlife refuge site with walking trails and is easily accessed by Rt. 290, 495, or I95. *DETAILED DUTIES* * The Director of the Hazardous Materials Response Division serves as the division head and is a member of the Department of Fire Services (DFS) senior staff. The Director reports to the Director of Operations to the Hazardous Materials Advisory Board. This position operates under MGL Chapters 21K. * Manages the six regional response teams directly and through the team leadership for each. Develops standard operating guidelines for the regional teams in cooperation with the policy subcommittee. * Manages the Department of Fire Services – Special Operations Unit. This requires oversight of large event planning, coordinating staffing and response to large scale incidents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This group is responsible for command vehicles that assist in the coordinated response at incidents and events as well as the agency’s drone program. * Liaisons with Massachusetts Department of Public health as the lead emergency response manager for biological terrorism. * Facilitates the purchase of equipment, implements and administers a statewide cost recovery system. * Acts as liaison to multiple state and federal agencies regarding hazardous materials incidents, terrorism and other emergencies as directed by the Fire Marshal. * Serves to manage the development of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction response programs for the fire service of Massachusetts, including but not limited to research and intelligence on current and emerging threats, recommendations for response plans, training and equipment. * Serves as the principal fire service liaison to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and as directed by the Fire Marshal, to the U.S. Attorney Anti-Terrorism Task Force. Manages the coordination of planning and response with the National Guard, Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team. * Conducts and manages research and development of systems and devices to meet the needs of emergency services for protection against weapons of mass destruction. * Performs related work as required. **A cover letter and resume expressing your interest in this position must be submitted as part of the application process. These documents must be specfically attached to the job requisition for which you are applying.* MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) six (6) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, public administration, public management, clinical administration or clinical management of which (B) at least two (2) years must have been in a project management, supervisory or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A certificate in a relevant or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience. II. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience. III. A Graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience. IV. A Doctorate degree in a related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience. /*The primary work location for this role will be at the DFS Stow MA campus.
