    Course Description

    ASTRO 102: Introductory Astronomy: Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe

     

    Discover the nature of stars, black holes, luminous nebulae, supernovae, galaxies, and other cosmic phenomena. In this concept-focused course, you will learn what these objects are, how they formed, and what is ultimately in store for the universe. Explore the roles of light, energy, and gravity in astronomy.

    Responsibilities*

    This is a remote 50% appointment. The class meets every day from 11- 12 pm; the GSI holds sections on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1-3 pm. The GSI should expect to hold 3 hours of office hours every week.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan (for Winter 2025)

    + Completed courses or have experience in astronomy/astrophysics

    + To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

    + Previous experience teaching courses in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics

    + Previous experience as a GSI with favorable student evaluations

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     Decision Making Process

    + Previous experience teaching courses in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics

    + Previous experience as a GSI with favorable student evaluations

     

    The decision-making procedures shall include the role of applicant preferences for course placement, procedures, and criteria for late appointments.

     

    The Graduate Program Chair will make the hiring decision.

     

    Selection Process

    The estimated date by which offers will be extended, and a reminder that an applicant may request the status of their application from the appointing unit. (Appointing units will make reasonable efforts to extend offers to successful applicants within six (6) weeks after the application due date. Offers will typically be extended at least twenty-one (21) calendar days prior to the start of employment.)
