    Job Duties: Leads the ANHC Stewardship Section with responsibility for strategic planning, prioritization and implementation of conservation efforts on natural areas across diverse ecosystems. Responsible for hiring and directing staff in conservation implementation efforts. Serves as real estate officer for lands acquired for inclusion in the ANHC System of Natural Areas. Negotiates with sellers and donors of property throughout the state; prepares and reviews real estate documents (purchase agreements, deeds, easements and title commitments) and reports acquisition information to the commission, supervisors and auditors. Manages and maintains property records on matters of property ownership, including but not limited to minerals, boundary disputes, access and right-of-way. Initiates, negotiates, and finalizes contracts for services including boundary surveys, appraisals, appraisal reviews, and title searches according to state procurement regulations and agency protocols. Prepares and administers the annual budget for acquisition projects and for operation, maintenance, salary and equipment needs in the ANHC Stewardship Section. Works with other government agencies and stewardship partners for the collaborative management of ANHC natural areas. Maintains and operates specialized scientific and land management equipment. Recommends and oversees capital improvement projects that facilitate ecosystem restoration and, when appropriate, outdoor recreation.

     

    Applicants must meet or exceed these qualifications : The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in a biological science such as ecology, wildlife management, forestry or a related field; plus four years of professional experience in an applied biological field, including two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

    Summary

    The Biologist Supervisor is responsible for directing and overseeing the management, protection, and enhancement of native wildlife and wildlife habitats on both public and private lands and waterways. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

     

    Functions

     

    Supervises the work of subordinate employees by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, providing general instructions, and reviewing the work performed to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with instructions or established policies and procedures. Prepares and administers the annual budget for operation, maintenance, salary, and equipment needs in the district. Collects and analyzes data on wildlife species and habitats in the district and makes recommendations with regards to regulations and program direction. Gives educational presentations to schools, civic groups, and organizations, in order to educate the public on agency activities and issues. Works with other state and federal agencies to plan the long term regulation and enhancement of wildlife resources. Maintains and operates specialized scientific equipment. Recommends and oversees capital improvement projects and maintenance of wildlife habitat. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    Knowledge of biological and ecological science theories and principles. Knowledge of the methods and techniques of scientific testing and analysis. Knowledge of the effects of pollution on plants, animals and human life. Knowledge of wildlife laws and regulations. Knowledge of environmental and ecological forces and impact relationships. Ability to assign and coordinate work activities and monitor the performance of co-workers and/or subordinates. Ability to collect samples and conduct scientific testing and analysis. Ability to plan and manage long term projects. Ability to develop natural area definition and classification criteria. Ability to prepare and make oral and written presentations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in a biological science, wildlife management or a related field; plus four years of experience in a field of biological science, including two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

     

    Licenses

     

    Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license.
