Saint-Gobain’s CertainTeed R&D center is looking for driven, talented, and experienced Principal Scientist/Group Leader to join their team.
The Granules Principal Scientist/Team Leader leads the overall R&D efforts for granules technology. This includes leading the portfolio of granules projects including granule innovation, sustainability, new materials and business continuity supporting raw material qualification, granule plant process support and granule color control and runnability at the shingle plants. The team leader will drive projects within the portfolio to industrialization. The granules team leader will be responsible for lab safety within the granules lab and to build the safety culture in the broader MIC environment. Additionally, the leader will grow and develop the granules team to deliver to business needs.
Essential Functions
+ Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives. Manages and documents projects effectively under minimal supervision by a technical leader or direct manager. Data and results are to be presented in oral and written form. Includes the generation of project timelines/plans, technical memos, research reports, and presentations to internal customers, project teams, and/or management.
+ Lead a group of engineers/technicians (admin work, support on technical aspect and provide guidance). Incumbent defines the associated tasks and milestones for research, and proposes the technical approach, cost estimates, and timeline.
+ Lead and/or execute strategic assignments related to either plant technology or equipment or business development, by performing analyses, setting up action plans and coordinating/executing such actions that are necessary to achieve the business goal.
+ Industrialize new technologies into granule and shingle plants ensuring safety, scalability and long-term process capability.

+ Demonstrate ability to function seamlessly in a business environment, interfacing and taking an active role in business project that may not have a predominant technical focus.
+ Demonstrate understanding of corporate structure and policies.
+ Holds team and group accountable for following gate methodology for any projects R&D group is responsible for.
+ Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with the years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, innovative solutions, industrialization of new processes, technical writing, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, IP, Patents, and technical documents.
+ Utilizes broad technical background and experience to develop and improve products, processes, and performance and reduces costs within a major product area.
+ Be able to fill in standard deliverables for project management through interactions with internal contacts outside of R&D.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree with 15+ years of experience; Master’s Degree with 10+ years’ experience or PhD with 6+ years of experience as a People Manager, managing large multi-departmental projects and managing R&D portfolios in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geology, or Mining Engineering.
+ Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience and demonstration of familiarity with one or several of the following technical fields:
+ ceramics and/or glass industry and/or mining products.
+ surface science, material characterization and analysis.
+ statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation.
+ IP, Patents, and technical documents.
+ Proven track record of bringing materials to industrial scale and successful product commercialization.
+ Lead projects within a structured process (Stage Gate), with proven contribution to product portfolio development and successful product launches.
+ Must have experience in a manufacturing environment and understand the principles of continuous production processes.
+ Six Sigma GB Certification is preferred.
