Job Description
JOB FUNCTION/ PURPOSE
The Laboratory Supervisor assumes responsibility for insuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Laboratory Department including analytical, regulatory, and administrative activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Assumes responsibility for insuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department by:
+ Formulating departmental goals, strategies, and operating policies and procedures and directing implementation of approved changes.
+ Making recommendations on employees regarding employment, performance appraisal, salary changes, promotions, transfers, or terminations.
+ Insuring productivity levels are maintained through effective monitoring of staffing levels and financial requirements.
+ Guiding personnel to achieve optimum performance levels.
+ Performs wastewater plant process control analyses and SPDES permit monitoring analyses for wastewater treatment plants as well as testing for the drinking water system
+ Supplies up to date lab results to Plant Managers and Plant Operators and suggests necessary process control changes
+ Ensures that all testing required by state and federal permits and regulations are performed as specified
+ Maintains the laboratory QA/QC program
+ Trains operators with respect to laboratory procedures and process control analyses
+ Performs testing for pH, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chlorine residual and all other necessary testing
+ Maintains laboratory equipment and facilities in proper working order
+ Interprets lab results to the plan operators and other utility personnel
+ Communicates with the public and regulatory agencies on an “as needed” basis
+ Organizes sampling and testing schedules for wastewater plants and the potable water system
+ Performs follow-up training and analysis to ensure operators are performing process control analyses according to proper procedure
+ Evaluates the performance of operators on a daily basis to ensure that tests are performed accurately and provide input to managers for annual performance review
+ Understands and adheres to all company health and safety procedures as they relate to essential job functions
QUALIFICATIONS
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Previous management or supervisory experience preferred
+ Familiarity with State and Federal regulations governing water and wastewater systems
+ Attentive to detail
+ Knowledge of testing, sampling and analysis procedures and equipment
_EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE_
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or other applied science and 5 years of related laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
+ Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals
+ Frequent lifting and carrying of 30-40 pounds when gathering samples
