Position Summary
Under the direction of the packaging manager, works with minimal oversight to develop packaging solutions for Edgewell’ s personal care product portfolio in Liquid packaging, categories include Grooming Brands – Jack Black Cremo, Bull Dog and Wet Shave (Razor and Blades). This individual will support innovation, cost savings and base business continuity projects. This position will serve as a key contributing member on cross functional business teams and support the development of product/package concepts from exploration through feasibility and ultimately implementation. The individual must be a self-starter who will monitor progress against timelines and deliverable due dates.
Essential Function
+ Manages assigned Package Development projects, working with Brand and project teams, to meet category objectives and project ship to trade dates.
+ Develops, engineers, and tests packaging components and modifies designs as necessary to meet consumer requirements, functional parameters, costing targets, and manufacturing & shipping requirements. Uses data and packaging tools to support recommendations.
+ Will lead projects and assist in root cause investigations related to quality inquiries, consumer feedback, and manufacturing improvement areas. This can include internal filling operations and/or external component suppliers manufacturing investigations.
+ Executes new package designs and performs package component testing and qualification, working with suppliers, from engineering prints to models & prototypes, through to unit and production tooling. Provides packaging options and risk mitigation strategies associated with each design.
+ Provides technical input to package design process and assures package is designed for manufacturing acceptability, while realizing desirable aesthetic elements and shares trade-offs with Marketing for final selection. Conducts and reports results of line and qualification trials for components and finished goods production.
+ Demonstrates ability to problem solve and troubleshoot in an automated production environment. Clearly communicates technical issues and details to the project team and management.
+ Utilizes appropriate investigative tools (i.e.-test result data), good engineering design principles, and GMP’swhen investigating issues and recommending corrective actions.
+ Works with manager to ensure the Packaging development process is functioning efficiently by assessing current processes and identifying ways to streamline or improve. Provides SOP improvements & updates.
+ Supports product development and quality related projects by collaborating with key functional partners and external suppliers.
+ Creates and presents reports for management and other internal groups. Reports include trips, supplier audits, and updates on current project status.
+ Supports investigation of consumer complaints (customer/consumer) to meet applicable standard operating procedures.
+ Writes, reviews, revises, and approves new packaging specifications, Bill of Materials (BOM’s), packaging assembly specs, technical drawings, resin data sheets, etc.
Required Skills and Experience
Experience/Education Required:
+ BS or MS in Mechanical, Package or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent degree.
+ Minimum of 7 years of package development experience required, ideally with consumer products companies.
+ Knowledge of a wide variety of packaging components and properties such as; aerosols, pumps, closures, bottles, tubes, flexible films and lamination, paperboard (folding cartons, cards, labels) plastic processing (injection and extrusion blow molding and cast and blown films
+ Experience with standard test methods as ASTM, GMPs, OTC testimg and protocols
Skills and Abilities Required
+ Ability to develop and execute innovative solutions for new cost savings ideas. Highly analytical and skilled in achieving operational efficiencies and committed to quality. Capable of seeing the big picture.
+ Must have the ability to develop new innovative lower cost solutions and conduct feasibility analysis with goal of recommending projects to implement.
+ Must be familiar with various manufacturing processes and mold types (e.g. injection molding, blow molding, assembly methods, decoration methods, mono and multi-layer film processing knowledge a plus, etc.)
+ Must have ability to understand modeling & prototype development processes through to unit and production tooling and qualification stages.
+ Must have the ability to evaluate designs concepts and prove out feasibility.
+ Must have the ability to manage third party relationships (e.g. outside design consultants, inventors, suppliers, etc.)
+ Effective verbal / written communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills. Ability to interface with internal and external contacts at all levels. Ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information via verbal presentations and in writing.
+ Must be a highly credible individual capable of rapid engagement, and of bridging relationships between R&D and other functional areas.
+ Must be capable of quickly establishing relationships both internally and externally, and at all levels.
+ Excellent negotiating and influencing skills, and capable of working across multiple functional areas, with a true sense of urgency in responding to delivering on challenges.
+ Good computer skills. Proficiency with Word, Excel, Access/databases e-mail and internet applications.
+ Excellent organizational, prioritizing and follow up skills.
+ Ability to handle multiple tasks / projects simultaneously.
+ Ability to think and act independently and make sound decisions.
+ Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time.
+ Good problem-solving skills.
Project Management Skills:
+ Must have the ability to prioritize and organize workload on multiple programs of low-to-medium complexity.
+ Must have the ability to develop and implement schedules and ensure that engineering procedures are followed.
+ Must have the ability to manage assigned projects, monitoring the status of all elements affecting the outcome of the program.
+ Must have the ability to guide laboratory support personnel as required to accomplish a task.
+ Must have the ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information via verbal presentation and in writing with management, team members and support personnel with normal supervision.
Preferred/Desired Skills and Experience
+ Experience with Packaging Equipment (e.g. developing equipment requirements, conducting FAT’s, IQ/OQ’s and Qualification processes.
+ Proficient with CAD/CAM systems such as AutoCAD, Artios, Solid Works or ProE.
+ Working knowledge of procurement systems and purchasing of packaging components.
+ Experience in an FDA related regulated products.
Work Environment
+ Travel domestically and internationally as required on assigned projects. Travel requirements are 10 to 20% per month, which may include overnight travel, travel to Shelton, CT, Milford, CT as well as other manufacturing, contract manufacturing and component manufacturing sites.
The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $110,000. Actual base salary offered to a candidate may vary based upon factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance.
