Position Title: Small Engine/Equipment Repair Technician
Salary Range: Regionally Competitive

Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Facilities/Director of Buildings and Grounds
Summary: The Small Engine/Equipment Repair Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing small engines and a variety of outdoor and grounds maintenance equipment used throughout the school corporation. This position also supports general maintenance efforts across buildings, athletic facilities, and playgrounds, helping to ensure a safe and functional environment for all students and staff.
Characteristics of Work
+ Frequent Activities: Primary responsibilities include repair and maintenance of small engines and outdoor maintenance equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, snow blowers, and similar tools. This position frequently assists with building and grounds maintenance, including repairs to athletic fields, playground equipment, fences, backstops, goal posts, and other facilities. Additional duties include operating and maintaining snow removal vehicles and specialized equipment such as 4x4 plows and 5-ton dump trucks. The role also includes inventory management and delivery of equipment and supplies to various school locations.
+ Occasional Activities: Tasks may occasionally include supporting larger construction or renovation efforts, coordinating with staff and vendors for equipment repairs or replacement, participating in professional training to stay current on evolving repair techniques, and providing input for purchasing new tools or equipment. Technicians may also assist in planning and estimating repair needs related to small engine and ground maintenance.
Responsibilities
+ Perform regular and preventive maintenance on small engines and groundskeeping equipment.
+ Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and fuel system issues on small engines.
+ Operate snow removal equipment and perform seasonal maintenance as needed.
+ Support general repair efforts for outdoor facilities, including playgrounds, athletic fields, and surrounding structures.
+ Conduct inspections to ensure all equipment is functioning properly and safely.
+ Maintain inventory of parts and tools required for repair work.
+ Ensure proper documentation of maintenance activities and repair logs.
+ Safely transport tools and equipment to school facilities for on-site repairs or delivery.
+ Comply with all relevant safety regulations and protocols.
+ Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
+ Required Experience or Training: Candidates must have completed at least three years of high school and possess a minimum of two years of experience in small engine or equipment repair. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds without assistance. Candidates must also be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which requires passing a DOT physical exam.
+ Desired Experience or Training: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Three years of experience in small engine/equipment repair and an additional three years in buildings and grounds maintenance is highly desirable. Post-secondary training in small engine repair, equipment maintenance, or general construction is also preferred.
+ Special Requirements: Candidates must demonstrate practical knowledge of diagnostic and repair techniques for small engines and related equipment. The ability to work independently or collaboratively with a maintenance team is essential. Must show proficiency in record-keeping and following maintenance schedules.
Working Conditions
+ Mental Demands: Must be able to apply and comply with various regulatory requirements, including OSHA standards, safety codes, environmental protection protocols, and district maintenance policies.
+ Physical Demands: Must be capable of lifting up to 60 pounds, working off ladders, and performing maintenance tasks in confined spaces, basements, and rooftops. The role may require extended periods of standing, kneeling, and manual labor.
+ Environmental Conditions: Work is primarily performed in indoor settings, including repair shops or maintenance areas, but may also require occasional outdoor tasks in varying weather conditions. The position involves exposure to noise, fuel fumes, oils, lubricants, dust, and mechanical hazards from small engines and equipment. Tasks may require working in confined spaces, bending, kneeling, or lifting heavy equipment. The mechanic must be available for scheduled shifts and emergency repairs, sometimes including evenings or weekends. Proper safety equipment and adherence to safety protocols are essential to ensure personal and workplace safety. Must be able to handle stress.
