Job Summary and Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the Clinical Director OR and/or Clinical Nurse Manager and in accordance with standards of care and practice established by the Nursing Organization, the specific department; the rules, regulations and/or standards established by the State Board of Nursing, the Joint Commission, Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and appropriate specialty organizations relevant to the patient population under care, the incumbent performs the following functions:
1. Essential Functions: Certified First Assistant (CFA)
1. Assists in moving and positioning patients for surgery.
1. Assists the surgeon in draping of the patient.
1. Retracts tissue and exposes the operating field area during the operative procedure.
1. Clamps and ties vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry.
1. Keeps the operative site dry.
1. Affords the surgeon the best possible exposure of the anatomy incident to the operation.
1. Assists the surgeon in identifying any structure which should not be ligated and keeps these structures from the moves of the surgeon.
1. Assists in closure of the incision including tying off bleeders, applying sutures and wound dressing and performs any and all tasks required of him/her by the surgeon incident to the particular procedure.
1. Practices correct operating room etiquette.
1. Complies with all relevant statutes, regulations and institutional policies pertaining to the role of the first assistant.
1. Applies principles of asepsis and infection control knowledgeably and skillfully.
1. Recognizes potential emergency situations or surgical hazards and initiate preventative or corrective measures in a timely manner.
1. Performs proficiently and calmly in all emergencies.
1. Works effectively and in harmony as part of the operative team.
1. Thorough understanding of appropriate instruments pertinent to the surgical case.
What qualifications you will need:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
+ Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program.
+ Completion of formal course of instruction for the First Assistant.
Experience:
+ Two plus years of experience as Surgical Technician.
Licensure/Certification:
+ Must be certified as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
