Description of Work

Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts and pipes within Division 1 and will be based in the Ahoskie Bridge Maintenance Unit in Hertford County. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. The employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools. The employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. The employee must be able to carry and lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently. The employee could possibly be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, the employee may be required to work at night or on weekends.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
+ Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures
+ Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
+ Experience in the maintenance and installation of erosion control devices
+ Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety Traffic Control
+ Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category C equipment: Backhoe, Tractor Trailer (Low-Boy), Truck Mounted Crane, Hydra-platform Lift, JLG Articulating Manlift
Additional Expectations:
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. The position will require climbing, bending, and walking on uneven terrain. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations, inclement weather, and may require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety toe shoes are required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
