    THIS POSITION WILL BE FILLED BY PROMOTION

    OF A PERMANENT CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF

    LA DPS&C – CORRECTIONS SERVICES (Adult DOC)

     

    This position has a Special Entrance Rate of $23.03 per hour.

    There is Premium Pay for this position:

    A rate between$1.00 and $2.00 an hour for each regular hour worked, based on years of service with

     

    DOC, in addition to regular pay.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Two years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

    1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR

    2. One year of experience in any field; OR

    3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

     

    In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

     

    Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

    Job Concepts

    Function of Work:

    To perform supervisory security work in a correctional institution by reviewing operations and adherence to standards and procedures.

    Level of Work:

    Supervisor.

    Supervision Received:

    General from a Corrections Captain or higher level security officer.

    Supervision Exercised:

    Direct line over Corrections Sergeant--Master, Corrections Sergeant, Corrections Cadet, and inmates assigned to Intensive Motivational Program Alternative Correctional Treatment (IMPACT) programs.

    Location of Work:

    Department of Public Safety and Corrections; Corrections Services; state adult and juvenile correctional institutions.

    Job Distinctions:

    Differs from Corrections Sergeant--Master by responsibilities as a first line supervisor of security officers of lesser rank, by reviewing operations for compliance with procedures or justification for deviation from standards for a small organizational unit, or by serving as an IMPACT drill instructor.

     

    Differs from Corrections Captain by absence of responsibility for supervising a major organizational unit.

     

    Examples of Work

     

    Conducts on-the-job training for staff.

     

    Serves as the ranking security officer in a specialized treatment unit.

     

    Serves as a recreation library supervisor at a large institution.

     

    Serves as an internal affairs security officer charged with investigative responsibilities.

     

    Serves as a shift supervisor of a small organizational unit in an institution.

     

    Serves on institution disciplinary boards and reviews disciplinary actions taken on inmates or security personnel.

     

    Organizes and conducts inspections and searches of inmates and their living and work areas.

     

    Reviews reports of irregularities and disturbances submitted by subordinates and may determine a course of action.

     

    Prepares reports for supervisory review.

     

    Serves as an instructor at the Corrections Training Academy.

     

    Performs special security functions within an institution as assigned.

    IMPACT DRILL INSTRUCTOR

    Trains, instructs, and commands IMPACT inmates in basic military movements and activities.

     

    Evaluates IMPACT inmates' abilities and performance.

     

    Assigns living quarters and sets basic privileges.

     

    Conducts inmate counts and shakedowns for contraband material.

     

    Conducts hygiene inspections of inmates several times daily to insure compliance with regulations.

     

    Marches inmates in military formation and calls cadence.

     

    Leads, instructs, and participates in physical exercises twice daily which includes the daily 1.5-mile run.

     

    Imposes physical discipline on IMPACT inmates within regulations.

     

    Grades and monitors performance of IMPACT inmates, utilizing the grading system established by the department.

     

    Assures that IMPACT inmates have no communication with general inmate population.

     

    Teaches drill instructor course to inmates. (Course material involves development of productive attitudes, personal hygiene, self-discipline, self-esteem, basic grammar, etc.)

     

    Writes reports and makes recommendations on program placement and discipline for IMPACT inmates.

     

    Assures that daily activities of IMPACT inmates are conducted in a paramilitary fashion.

     

    Investigates accidents and work related injuries to determine causes and circumstances and to recommend remedial action.
