    This full-time, permanent status accruing Extension Agent will work jointly for UF/IFAS Extension and Osceola County Board of County Commissioners. The successful candidate will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs focused on livestock and forage systems with a target audience that includes both adults and youth ages 5 to 18. Commercial programs will focus on regulatory issues and Best Management Practices (BMPs) associated with the production and management of beef enterprises, mainly range cattle production. Educational efforts will also include support for small ruminants, equine management, and forage and hay crop production.

     

    Other areas to be supported through education will include small ruminants and horses. Programs will also include all aspects of forage and hay crop production.

     

    Maintenance of a functioning agricultural advisory committee representative of the community is required, as is developing an effective working relationship with local producers and agricultural organizations.

    What you will do:

    + Plan, develop, teach, and evaluate agricultural education programs to farmers, ranchers, youth and the community about livestock and forage crop production.

    + Engage with 4-H colleagues to develop and implement livestock and agriculture-focused programs for youth ages 5-18, dedicating 30% of your time to fostering educational and developmental opportunities.

    + Recruit, train, and utilize volunteers in building strong community programs.

    + Conduct and support research and demonstration field trials at the Kenansville Demonstration site.

    + Lead field days to show new forage crops and methods to manage pastures more efficiently.

    + Build an advisory committee composed of citizens and professionals that will assist with program priorities and design.

    + Partner with colleagues, community leaders, agencies, and elected officials to create opportunities that enhance the local agricultural industry.

    + Demonstrate resourcefulness, creativity, enthusiasm, collaboration, leadership, and innovation to strengthen educational programs.

    + Seek, secure, and manage grants, contracts, or other funding and partnership opportunities to support livestock and forage crops educational programs for both adult and youth audiences.

    + Attend and contribute to professional meetings and in-service trainings and actively seek out and attend professional development opportunities.

    + Follow all county, UF, and IFAS Extension policies regarding Civil Rights.

    + Perform other duties as outlined by the County Extension Director and the District Extension Director.

    Required Qualifications:

    + A bachelor’s degree in animal science or closely related field is required. We will accept applicants without a bachelor’s degree if the degree will be earned by May 2025.

    + If hired solely with a bachelor’s degree, we want you to advance your career by making at least 50% progress toward obtaining your master’s degree within the first 6 years of employment. The successful candidate will be able to participate in the Employee Education Program.

    + Ability to work cooperatively as a leader and team member.

    + Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

    + Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    + Evidence of resourcefulness, creativity, enthusiasm, and innovativeness.

    + High-level organizational development and management skills.

    + Knowledge and experience in using and applying information technology and communications applications.

    Preferred:

    + A master’s degree is preferred.

    + Previous experience with animal science, agriculture, agricultural education, farm management, or a closely related field.

    + Experience working with people from varied backgrounds.

    + Experience creating lesson plans, developing instructional materials, and applying teaching methods appropriate for a broad range of audiences.

    + Technological literacy is necessary for communication and program management, including social media.
