    The Cadet Program Eligibility includes: 18 years of age at time of employment, possession of a High School diploma or GED at time of employment, and the possession of a valid Driver's License. All Police Cadets must also pass a basic sports physical prior to employment.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    Ability to read and write; ability to perform basic addition and subtraction functions; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate a computer; ability to maintain records; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    AREA OF FOCUS FOR THE JOB AND SPECIFIC FOCUS AREA RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Police Cadet program is up to 3 years for those interested in a career in law enforcement. Police Cadets will participate in an 18 week academy before transitioning to job assignments within the Division. Police Cadets will also participate in continued educational and community engagement opportunities. All training is under the supervision of the Cadet Training Staff and other Division personnel.

     

    During the course of the Program, Police Cadets will also complete the below job duties, this is not intended to be an all-inclusive list. All duties are in preparation for the Columbus Police Academy:

     

    • Participate in physical fitness training and foundational subject control training

    • Learn about Columbus Division of Police Directives, Patrol standard operating procedures, and City of Columbus Central Work Rules

    • Learn legal concepts, such as Ohio Revised Code, and fundamentals of criminal justice

     

    The Cadet program is designed to help prepare individuals for the Columbus Police Officer selection process. While participation in the cadet program offers valuable experience, it does not guarantee subsequent employment as a Police Officer, as all candidates must undergo a competitive selection process.

    DESCRIPTION/LISTING/ESTIMATED DURATION OF THE SELECTION PROCESS

    All applications for this position will be forwarded to the department indicated above. For those candidates passing the application review step, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test. For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination. The selection process can take as little as 3 weeks and up to 3 months.

     

    Under immediate supervision, is responsible on a part-time basis for learning, collecting,analyzing, and summarizing information used by technicians, professional workers, and administrators; performs related duties as required.

     

    Examples of Work

     

    (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

     

    Researches information needed by technicians, professional workers, and administrators by reviewing periodicals, obtaining research materials from libraries, or reviewing technical documents;

     

    Obtains information from citizens, applicants, or public officials; prepares and mails out questionnaires; interviews citizens, applicants, or public officials; summarizes information obtained and draws conclusions for review by supervisors;

     

    Files periodicals, maps, reports, studies, contracts, and other data; collects printed materials;

     

    Assists technicians and professionals in conducting various types of inspections and investigations and in the performance of other technical duties;

     

    Assists in improving current operating procedures, conducting program evaluations, coordinating various programs and short-term projects, and maintaining inventory control systems;

     

    Operates office machines such as calculators, duplicating equipment, and scanners; learns to operate technical equipment such as audio and video equipment;

     

    Learns to generate, verify, and/or code data such as computer based test data;

     

    Learns to provide requested technical information and assistance to organizations and individuals;

     

    Maintains records and prepares narrative and statistical reports and other written documents;

     

    May deliver documents to City and other officials.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Actively enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program in a college, university, or technical school,ORactively enrolled in a cadet program in the Department of Public Safety.
