Job Description
The State Budget Office (SBO) is an autonomous entity under the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget is responsible for developing the governor’s Executive Budget recommendation, presenting budget recommendations to the Legislature, and implementing the approved budget signed by the governor. The office also includes the Office of Financial Management, SIGMA, Internal Audit, and the Center for Educational Performance and Information. Learn more at www.Michigan.gov/budget.
About this position:
As director of legislative and external affairs, this position will coordinate SBO’s legislative program and provide consultation and recommendations on legislation and legislative inquiries advising the chief strategy and engagement officer, chief deputy director, and director of the state budget on all phases of the legislative process.
As the director of legislative and external affairs you will:
+ Direct legislative and external affairs, coordinating and representing the State Budget Office position on legislation and legislative inquiries.
+ Coordinate and direct legislative analyses to support the legislative strategy.
+ Coordinate and direct external stakeholder engagement to support the legislative strategy.
+ Prepare written communications on legislation; and assist with legislative communication on budget bills.
+ Utilize effective leadership skills to manage and direct the work activities of professional staff to support the legislative and external affairs strategy within the State Budget Office.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Office location is Lansing, MI, however, this position may work a hybrid work option (combination of remote/in-office) which requires two days working on-site at the official workstation with the potential of up to three days remote work per week.
Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview. Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.
Required Education and Experience
Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.

Experience
Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level.
Note: Experience is considered professional if the job required a bachelor's degree.
***Relevant experience for this position includes knowledge of the State of Michigan’s legislative process, considerable knowledge of public relations techniques, and knowledge of Michigan state government organization and functions. Prior experience developing, communicating, and executing legislative strategies is desirable.
Alternate Education and Experience
Education level typically acquired through completion of high school and two years of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 14 level; or, one year of safety and regulatory or law enforcement experience at the 15 level, may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.
