Position Summary:
We are seekinga powerhouse CFO—a mission-aligned, strategic, and hands-on leader committed to operational excellence and long-term impact. This leader must be excited to serve the greater community and be ready to grow with an organization that’s driving lasting change.
The CFO is responsible for the overall fiscal well-being of the Urban League of Rochester (ULR) and its affiliates. As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team (Mission Team), the CFO plays a critical role in developing financial strategies, managing day-to-day finance operations, and advising senior leadership on financial planning and analysis.
The CFO also provides financial oversight, guidance, and management for the Urban League of Rochester Economic Development Corporation (ULREDC)—a subsidiary of the Urban League. This includes developing and maintaining distinct fiscal reporting processes for both ULR and ULREDC, ensuring financial accountability and compliance for each entity.
Key Responsibilities
+ Oversee all accounts, ledgers, financial systems (Fund EZ), and ensure compliance with GAAP standards and applicable regulations.
+ Manage and maintain relationships with banks and financial institutions.
+ Monitor and forecast cash flow; develop systems for tracking and accountability.
+ Lead the annual budgeting process for both ULR and ULREDC through an inclusive, collaborative process.
+ Provide staff training on budgeting, fiscal responsibility, and internal financial processes.
+ Analyze financial data and clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
+ Ensure timely and accurate submission of documents for grant reimbursements.
+ Monitor changes and trends in financial performance and advise leadership accordingly.
+ Lead turnaround strategies and long-term fiscal planning to support organizational sustainability.
+ Supervise finance personnel including hiring, training, evaluation, and delegation.
+ Represent finance in weekly leadership meetings and advise on financial implications of strategic decisions.
+ Maintain, analyze, and interpret general ledger across multiple funding sources.
+ Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure programs are financially viable and efficiently administered.
+ Collaborate with external auditors and funders to manage audits and financial reviews.
+ Recommend and implement enhancements to financial operations, reporting, and compliance practices.
+ Maximize returns on ULR investments and manage cash in alignment with regulations.
+ Support the planning and submission of budgets for grant proposals aligned with strategic goals.
+ Oversee the annual Consolidated Fiscal Report and additional funder-required reports.
+ Maintain accurate financial recordkeeping systems, including fund and grant accounting.
+ Ensure an effective, mission-driven finance department culture.
+ Advise and support the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees.
+ Attend board and subcommittee meetings as a financial advisor.
+ Represent the organization on the Executive Leadership Team.
+ Perform other duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
Internal & External Relationships
Internal:Collaborate with the President & CEO, Leadership Team, and Board of Directors to develop financial policy, track performance, and support strategic goals. Provide financial guidance to staff and ensure fiscal compliance across departments.
External:Manage relationships with funders, auditors, vendors, financial institutions, insurance providers, and other key partners.
Requirements
Education:
+ CPA or Master’s Degree preferred.
+ Equivalent education and experience considered.
Experience:
+ Minimum 3–5 years of progressive leadership in nonprofit finance.
+ Experience managing accounting for multiple entities preferred.
+ Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics Fund EZ, and Excel required.
Skills and Competencies
+ Expertise in nonprofit accounting, budgeting, and grant management.
+ Proven leadership in supervising staff and managing department functions.
+ Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
+ High attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
+ Commitment to the mission and values of the Urban League.
+ Demonstrated collaboration, flexibility, and creative problem-solving abilities.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
+ Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
+ Standard office environment.
