Job Overview
Pennymac is seeking a dynamic and experienced First Vice President of Engineering to lead our Digital Consumer Experience Engineering workstream. This critical role will oversee multiple teams of talented engineers responsible for delivering and enhancing our core customer-facing digital platforms. This includes two teams focused on our loan servicing platforms (mobile app and website) and one team responsible for our digital marketing sites and shared authentication services. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of technical leadership, strategic vision, and the ability to drive innovation to create best-in-class digital experiences for our customers.
A Typical Day
Leadership and Strategy
+ Provide overall technical leadership and direction for the Digital Consumer Experience Engineering workstream.
+ Develop and execute a strategic roadmap aligned with business goals, ensuring that technology solutions enhance the online and mobile customer journey for servicing and acquisition.
+ Build and maintain strong relationships with product management, marketing, servicing operations, and other key stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities.
+ Drive architectural decisions and technology choices across the mobile, web, and backend platforms within the workstream.
Team Management and Development
+ Recruit, hire, and develop high-performing engineers across the three teams (Servicing Mobile App, Servicing Website, Marketing Sites & Authentication).
+ Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
+ Mentor and coach team leads and individual engineers to reach their full potential.
+ Manage team capacity and allocation to align with strategic priorities and project deliverables.
Technology Oversight
+ Ensure the effective design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of the Pennymac mobile application (React Native for iOS/Android).
+ Oversee the development and evolution of the servicing website (React Native Web), promoting code sharing and efficiency with the mobile app via common component libraries.
+ Provide technical direction for the shared .NET/C# API layer serving the mobile app and website, including guiding the ongoing transition from AWS EC2 to AWS Lambda/serverless architecture.
+ Guide the development and maintenance of our digital marketing websites, utilizing Python/Django and Ruby on Rails frameworks.
+ Oversee the strategy, development, and security of the shared authentication service used across digital platforms.
+ Champion the use of AWS cloud services (EC2, Lambda, serverless, etc.) to build scalable, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
Operational Excellence
+ Establish and maintain high standards for software development practices, code quality, testing strategies, and deployment processes (CI/CD).
+ Implement monitoring, alerting, and performance management processes to ensure system reliability, security, and optimal user experience.
+ Manage budgets and resources effectively for the workstream.
+ Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering teams.
What You’ll Bring
+ Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
+ Experience: 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing multiple engineering teams, preferably focused on consumer-facing web and mobile applications.
+ Technical Skills:
+ Strong experience with modern frontend frameworks, specifically React Native and/or React Native Web.
+ Experience with mobile application development lifecycles (iOS/Android deployment, App Store/Play Store processes).
+ Proficiency with backend development, including experience with .NET/C#.
+ Familiarity with backend frameworks such as Python/Django or Ruby on Rails is highly desirable.
+ Strong knowledge of cloud platforms, specifically AWS (EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, serverless concepts, etc.).
+ Deep understanding of API design principles, microservices architecture, and system integration.
+ Experience with building and managing shared authentication/authorization systems.
+ Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DevOps practices.
+ Leadership Skills:
+ Proven ability to lead, inspire, and motivate technical teams in a fast-paced environment.
+ Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
+ Strategic thinker with strong problem-solving abilities and business acumen.
+ Results-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality products and value to the organization.
Bonus Points:
+ Experience in the financial services or mortgage industry.
+ Direct experience leading transitions from monolithic or VM-based applications to serverless architectures (AWS Lambda).
+ Experience managing shared component libraries or design systems for cross-platform development (web/mobile).
+ Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies at scale.
+ Track record of driving innovation and adopting new technologies to improve customer experience and efficiency.

Compensation: Individual salary may vary based on multiple factors including specific role, geographic location / market data, and skills and experience as defined below:
+ Lower in range - Building skills and experience in the role
+ Mid-range - Experience and skills align with proficiency in the role
+ Higher in range - Experience and skills add value above typical requirements of the role
Some roles may be eligible for performance-based compensation and/or stock-based incentives awarded to employees based on company and individual performance.
Salary
$140,000 - $175,000
