JOB TITLE: Secondary Special Education Teacher: 4+ Transition
CLASSIFICATION : Certified
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR : Building Administrator
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Building Administrator and Director of Special Education

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION : Develop plans and provide individualized instruction to high school students to achieve their postsecondary goals for living, learning, and working. Engages in professional growth and fulfills professional responsibilities.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities :
+ Knowledge of the transition IEP process and 4+ programming.
+ Provide high quality instruction for living, learning, and working.
+ Develops positive interpersonal relationships and works cooperatively with students, parents, staff, and the community.
+ Demonstrates a positive attitude and contributes to a positive work environment.
+ Promotes a positive image of the Urbandale Schools and develops partnerships with businesses and organizations in the community.
+ Complies with state and federal laws for students in special education.
+ Arrives on time, completes work in a timely manner, and demonstrates initiative and ability to work independently without close supervision.
+ Seeks professional growth opportunities related to the position
Education :
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or Board of Educational Examiners approved alternative.
Certification/Licensure :
+ Valid Iowa teaching license with secondary special education endorsement (K-12 Instructional Strategist II preferred)
+ Work Experience Coordinator Endorsement (234) or willingness to obtain
Experience :
+ Experience teaching students with disabilities (secondary).
+ Experience with transition IEP development (preferred).
+ Experience organizing work experience opportunities for students in collaboration with community businesses and organizations.
+ Experience in working with organizations that provide services to individuals with disabilities is recommended.
Equipment :
+ Office equipment such as computers, two-way radios, multi-line phone system, cell phone, copier, and fax machines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
+ Demonstrate effective implementation of the eight Iowa Teaching Standards and 42 criteria.
+ Meet professional responsibilities as outlined in the Professional Growth Assessment Process, Employee Handbook, and Board policy.
+ Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth.
+ Maintain a reliable attendance record.
+ Work collaboratively with the IEP team to develop meaningful transition plans and work experiences.
+ Implement IEPs that address individual needs aligned to post-secondary plans for students with varying levels of need.
+ Provide specially designed instruction, including experiences aligned to individual transition plans for living, learning, and working as identified by the IEP team based on individual student need.
+ Communicate information about local organizations that provide services to individuals with disabilities.
+ Maintain accurate documentation and reports for students and the 4+ program.
+ Provide vocational instruction as necessary to ensure understanding of disabilities and assist with developing appropriate vocational choices.
+ Work cooperatively with community agencies and businesses to establish appropriate experiences for students with disabilities aligned to transition goals.
+ Provide appropriate instruction and training for living, learning, and working after high school as identified by the student’s IEP team.
+ Provide direction and training to support staff.
+ Serve as a special education representative on committees that are related to postsecondary.
+ Maintains a professional appearance.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
- Satisfactory health as certified by a competent medical authority upon hire.
- Repetitious bending, lifting, and hand movement.
- Ability to work while standing, moving and/or walking.
- Drug, tobacco, and alcohol-free while working.
- Must be able to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
- Majority of work is performed in an office or school setting.
- Occasional meetings outside the school day.
- Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials and emergency situations.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :
- Per Board Policies and the UEA Master Contract.
- Performance evaluated per Board Policy and the Professional Growth Assessment Process.
