Description
The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified applicants for an Equipment Operator II in our Water Production Division. The Equipment Operator II will be responsible for driving various types of equipment to and from job sites, transporting crew, and doing routine maintenance on vehicles.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, forklifts, and other motorized equipment.
+ Applies chemicals to lakes, dredges lakes, harvests weeds, and repairs and rebuilds boat ramps.
+ Maintains pipeline by using heavy equipment to locate raw water mains, repairing and replacing air valves, maintaining and repairing equipment at pump stations, maintaining vaults and manholes, opening and closing valves, and assisting in directing the flow of traffic or redirecting traffic.
+ Transports heavy equipment, supplies, and materials to job sites.
+ Performs safety checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
+ Assists with loading/unloading materials, job site tasks, and maintaining clean equipment and work areas.
+ Lifts up to 75 lbs., climbs, stands, pulls, bends, stoops throughout portions of the work day.
+ Assist workers as needed.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Two years operating heavy equipment or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
The preferred candidate will possess underground utility system experience.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Driver's License required.
The preferred candidate will possess a Class A CDL.
Work Hours: Monday through Thursday; 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Work Location: Moores Bridges Water Treatment Plant, 6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia
This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.
This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
+ Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
