Description
The Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk, VA is seeking to hire a Horticulture Technician to p erform activities related to the beautification, health and aesthetics of ornamental landscape planting. This position manages and performs all work in the green houses and grounds surrounding the area. Responsible for landscape design and construction, irrigation design and maintenance and greenhouse collections.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Performs activities related to the beautification, health and aesthetics of ornamental landscape planting
+ Maintains the botanical collections by pruning, planting, fertilizing, watering and performing other related duties
+ Performs turf management by fertilizing, seeding and performing other related duties
+ Maintains gardens and exhibits to include watering, potting plants, applying weed control, trimming, planting, mulching, raking leaves, seeding, fertilizing and pulling weeds
+ Monitors irrigation system and performs maintenance when needed
+ Assists in the education of visitors and volunteers
+ Requires ability to work outdoors and lift heavy plant material
+ Requires ability to use small tools and operate motorized equipment
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Two years experience in the horticultural field.
Valid Driver’s License required
VA Pesticide Applicator License required within first 6 months
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: Virginia Zoological Park, 3500 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23504
Work Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 6:30am-3:00pm, 40 hours per week.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
