    Job Description

    THIS POSTING IS FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES

    ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    + High School Diploma or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

    Experience

    _Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements._

     

    + **Level D**

    + A minimum of (2) years experience working as a Small Engine Mechanic

    Certification/Licensure

    + Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued from the jurisdiction of residence.

    Mission Essential Designation

    + In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority¿s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

    Summary

    The Small Engine Mechanic repairs gasoline and diesel-powered engines and equipment, stationary engines, discharge pumps, power washers, small tractors, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and troubleshoots related problems. Performs routine preventive maintenance and responds to equipment trouble reports, determines problem(s), and repairs and restores the small engine equipment to serviceable status.

     

    **_Job Levels_** _: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description_

    Essential Functions

    + Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs a variety of small engine systems for power washers and a range of seasonal landscape machines, such as push mowers, handheld edgers, rider mowers, walk-behind mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, backpack blowers, truck-mounted salt spreaders, and tractors.

    + Arranges work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively repair equipment. Repairs and overhauls defective components, operates devices to test performance, and lubricates and cleans components and equipment. Makes major adjustments to functional components, devices, and control instruments.

    + Dismantles small engine units to gain access to and remove defective parts by using hoists, cranes, and hand and power tools. Rebuilds components and assemblies (e.g., carburetors, fuel pumps), fits and installs rings, pistons, gears, etc. Aligns, meshes and connects repaired units to related mechanisms; ensures fuel, electric, and related systems are properly adjusted and connected.

    + Operates a lathe, drill-press, grinder and other powered and hand tools, performing welding and burning tasks as necessary, to assure that the small engine powered vehicles operate safely and in accordance to manufacture's guidelines.

    + Performs preventive maintenance inspections on seasonal lawn equipment in compliance with required frequencies.

    + Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines, attends required training classes, and assists in training co-workers.

    + Responds to, and assists in, operational emergencies such as supporting efforts during emergency snow events, to ensure equipment is operating correctly for workers who are assigned to correct unsafe conditions.

    + Maintains records of inspection reports and performs follow-up action to ensure deficiencies noted are corrected in a timely and effective manner. Utilizes maintenance management database to document equipment maintenance activities.
