    Automation Technician

    Job Description

    We are seeking a skilled Automation Technician to maintain a safe and secure work environment, evaluate and troubleshoot facility and manufacturing control systems, and design control systems to improve process efficiency. This role involves hands-on involvement with industrial equipment and requires a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

    Responsibilities

    + Maintain a safe and secure work environment, including correcting unsafe acts/conditions, facilitating safety meetings, performing safety inspections, and investigating accidents.

    + Evaluate and troubleshoot facility and manufacturing control systems including PLCs, VFDs, computer controls, HMI interfaces, and process instrumentation.

    + Troubleshoot or modify existing PLC programs and make system hardware recommendations to resolve operational problems.

    + Design control systems and prepare drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and scopes of work.

    + Document and maintain revisions to existing automated systems and maintain appropriate PLC and computer software/hardware information.

    + Design and implement improvements to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve reliability of existing plant and manufacturing control systems and equipment.

    + Assist maintenance personnel in troubleshooting, testing, modifying, and installing electrical equipment and control systems.

    + Support the maintenance department with implementation of SAP work orders and maintenance hour tracking and adjustment.

    + Repair critical electrical equipment, perform preventive and predictive maintenance, and complete projects such as mechanical and electrical hardware and software upgrades.

    + Repair and replace control devices such as switches, proximity sensors, push buttons, contactors, motor starters, and thermocouples.

    + Read electrical drawings for conveyors, machines, and buildings.

    + Repair, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical breakdowns associated with high-speed packaging and processing machinery.

    + Perform efficient troubleshooting and repair to maximize efficiencies and limit downtime.

    + Maintain and repair electrical breakdowns in operation, including packaging equipment, motors, conveyors, ovens, VFDs, PLCs, wrappers, palletizers, robotics, and blending operations.

    + Repair and replace defective components in motors, generators, controllers, switchboards, conductors, switches, and varied electrical fixtures.

    + Maintain calibration of instrumentation and supporting records.

    + Perform defensive repair and preservation of electronic and electrical systems, equipment, and devices.

    + Test solid-state circuitry to determine defective components and replace defective parts.

    + Effectively respond to directions during emergencies by understanding emergency procedures, equipment, and systems; implement contingency plans as required.

    + Comply with environmental regulations when using, dispensing, or handling hazardous and non-hazardous materials and waste.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Essential Skills

    + 5+ years experience in a manufacturing environment.

    + 5+ years related experience as an Automation and Controls Technician.

    + Experience with industrial equipment including SIEMENS PLCs, computers, computer networks, and high-speed packaging and filling equipment.

    + Experience in a Food and Beverage manufacturing environment.

    + Knowledge and skill in programming PLCs using Ladder Logic, Function Block, Structured Text, and Statement logic.

    + Knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

    + Knowledge of communication protocols such as Fieldbus, Modbus, Profibus, ControlNet, DeviceNet, HART, Ethernet TCP/IP, Fiber, and OPC.

    + Knowledge of power distribution including single phase, three phase, low voltage, medium voltage, and high voltage.

    + Knowledgeable in instrumentation calibration of pressure, temperature, flow, and level.

    + Advanced computer skills and proficiency in MS Office and other Windows-based programs.

    + Ability to read electrical blueprints and schematics preferred.

    + Ability to handle sensitive and proprietary information in a confidential manner.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Associate’s degree in automation technology, robotics, or a related discipline preferred.

    + Advanced understanding of networks and ability to troubleshoot common outages and system communication issues.

    + Experience with Siemens PLCs is a must-have.

    + Experience with Allen-Bradley systems is beneficial.

    Work Environment

     

    Work in a manufacturing environment exposed to occupational hazards such as high noise levels and physical obstacles. Appropriate safety glasses, hearing protection, clothing, and footwear are required in designated areas. The role involves frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, standing, and sitting with repetitive hand and finger movements. Employees may need to push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects (50–70 pounds). Tools, uniforms, and PPE are provided.

    The pay range for this position is $72800.00 - $90000.00/yr.
