    Position Summary

    Position is responsible for assisting the attorney in arranging office appointments with clients who have been charged with a Major Felony or functional equivalent of a major Felony (as in Juvenile Court). Working up case from Initial Hearing through trial by gathering and processing discovery; locating, interviewing, and preparing witnesses; interviewing the client.

    Position Responsibilities

    Locates witnesses for and against the client.

     

    Arrange office appointments, work under the attorney's specific guidance and instruction in interviewing witnesses.

     

    Assist the attorney in witness interviews by note taking or recording witness interviews. Subpoena service including hand service.

     

    Assist the attorney with photographs, diagrams or maps of crime scene or other relevant areas to defense investigation. Schedule and attend depos and taped statements.

     

    Ongoing assistance to the attorney in organizing the trial file.

     

    Organize exhibits, schedule witnesses, set-up audio-visual aids.

     

    Assist the attorney at trial by note taking during voir dire, State's case in chief and any defense presentation of evidence.

     

    Organize new files as discovery and pleadings are received from the State. Drafting discovery motions and specific discovery requests.

     

    Track the progress of discovery requests and collecting records produced.

     

    Answer phone calls from clients when the attorney is out of the office or in court including calls from jail. Visit clients at Detention Center, DOC, CCA, or MCJ, as instructed by attorney.

     

    Creates and maintains electronic files on the Agency's database system (OneNote, PDIS & Quest).

     

    Back up to Paralegal III's, as needed.

     

    Operates a variety of general office equipment, including a computer, copy machine, and fax.

    Qualifications

    High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Associate's Degree or certificate in paralegal studies is preferred with at least three (3) years additional experience in criminal justice. Experience may be substituted for degree requirements. Well-organized and work well under pressure. This position requires excellent oral and writing skills. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, clients and the general public in a professional, courteous and concise manner required. Must have the ability to interact with people in varying positions and from different walks of life and a strong desire to work with the indigent community, and a willingness to work under pressure while dealing with unexpected situations and deadlines. Must possess typing and computer skills. A valid driver's license, insurance and dependable transportation is required. Knowledge of legal terminology, court procedure and legal ethics required to perform services for Agency. A working knowledge of mapping software, such as GIS (Indiana Geographic Information System). A working knowledge of media playing software, such as VLC Media Player. Familiarity with Social media: Facebook, Instagram, and snap chat preferred.

     

    Independent Judgment

     

    Position requires the knowledge of established policies and procedures, which controls most of the incumbent(s) actions. Independent judgment may be utilized if it is performed at the request of the supervising attorney. Individual judgment is required for the comparison and evaluation required for the method of research, interactions with client and family. Prioritization of assigned duties. Assigned to a court(s) and receives directives from attorney III's & IV's.
