POSITION SUMMARY
As an Executive Communications Lead focused on executive and strategy communications, this role will develop messaging, materials and communications programming to drive organizational alignment that enables execution of Marathon’s vision and strategy across the enterprise. In addition to communications development, activities include providing strategic counsel, helping to scale related programs and systems, as well as the ideation, development and execution of communications plans that drive internal and external engagement and business impact. This role will also be a key contributor to the creation and implementation of programs, processes and tools that advance functional excellence across the broader Communications team.
As one of the company’s communications professionals, the successful candidate must deliver well-crafted messages and compelling content that resonates with leaders, employees and external stakeholders. The selected individual will utilize a mix of research, consulting, influencing, project management and content development capabilities.
This role is part of the Communications & Community Relations organization and belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Build and maintain trusted relationships at all levels in the company to advance strategic alignment through delivery of compelling, fit-for-purpose communications and programs.
+ Create and deliver executive-level communications materials – including presentations, video scripts, speeches, Q&As, content and follow-on cascade materials for employees and external stakeholders that right-size complex, sensitive and business critical topics (e.g., Town Halls, enterprise-wide emails, external conferences, keynote addresses).
+ Craft and manage communications content (articles, videos, emails, newsletters, etc.) including writing, editing, guiding creative and/or event design, and facilitating content approval.
+ Provide expertise and develop tailored multi-channel executive communications plans that build confidence, advance understanding and inspire action.
+ Apply communications best practices, disciplined measurement, research findings, team learnings and stakeholder insights to continuously improve and enhance communications effectiveness.
+ Contribute to the creation and implementation of programs, processes and tools that advance functional excellence across the broader Communications team, including development and maintenance of written and visual style guides, documentation of standard practices/playbooks, and identification and application of tools and learning programs.
+ Work collaboratively and cross-functionally with Communications & Community Relations team members and other organizations, including Strategy & Business Development, to ensure consistency, cohesion and compliance, and to mitigate risks.
+ Provide guidance and support to less experienced team members and contribute to the overall development of the team’s collective skills and expertise.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, business or related field required.
+ Ten (10) years of communications experience at a large or midsized company or public relations firm, including previous experience delivering high visibility communications required.
+ Five (5) years of developing executive communications and/or corporate strategy communications strongly preferred.
+ Refining/energy or manufacturing industry experience preferred.
SKILLS:
+ Strong ability to communicate complex topics effectively to all types of employees and leaders, from executives to front-line workers, including cascading messaging throughout a large, dynamic organization.
+ Demonstrated ability to craft communications for executives that capture and convey credibility to instill confidence, gain alignment, influence behavior and drive action.
+ Advanced knowledge of internal and external communication strategies, techniques and best practices; ability to think strategically and build implementation plans that have a measurable impact.
+ Excellent writing and content development skills, including when under pressure.
+ Demonstrated ability to present business plans, concepts, strategies and results succinctly and persuasively.
+ Demonstrated capacity to be highly creative, analytical and data-driven at the same time; skilled at measuring the right things to derive useable insights.
+ Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, continuously changing environment with a high degree of autonomy, accountability and accuracy.
+ Excellent collaboration skills with the ability to build strong relationships and work effectively in a matrixed organization.
+ Adept project manager with outstanding attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities and programs concurrently and with little oversight.
+ High curiosity; eager to learn and understand a wide range of energy industry and business subject matter as well as communications technology and platforms.
TRAVEL:
+ Travel required throughout the year to meet with clients and other key stakeholders. Travel can increase throughout the year as business needs require.
