    Job Description

    College Aide, 1st Year graduate

     

    The Bureau of Communicable Diseases is responsible for the surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases, including foodborne, waterborne, respiratory, zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. Within the Bureau of Communicable Diseases, the Disease Investigation Unit conducts rapid investigations of infectious disease cases, exposures, and outbreaks.

     

    The Disease Investigation Unit has openings for six new interns to assist with investigation of cases and outbreaks of infectious diseases, including foodborne and waterborne diseases. The candidate would start in May/June 2025 and continue working with the group through the 2025-2026 academic year. The candidate would work 35 hours/week during the summer and 19 hours/week/Par-time when school is in session.

    DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

    - Under supervision of public health epidemiologists, successful candidates will conduct the following activities:

    - Investigate cases of reportable infectious diseases.

     

    - Collect data from health care providers and medical records. Interview patients about their illness, exposures, and contacts.

     

    - Data entry, data management, and/or miscellaneous projects; Participate in outbreak investigations, as needed.

     

    - Assist with other disease investigations within the Bureau of Communicable Disease where necessary.

    PREFERRED SKILLS:

    - Excellent verbal and written communication skills

     

    - Strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology

     

    - Strong organizational and time management skills

     

    - Currently enrolled in a graduate (MPH, MS or PhD) program in public health or related field;

     

    - Incoming students encouraged to apply.

    Qualifications

    For Assignment Level I:

    Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.

    For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):

    Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.

    For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):

    Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

    SPECIAL NOTE

    Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
