    The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management, is seeking to fill an Environmental Specialist III vacancy in Augusta.

     

    BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:This is professional services work involved in the development and implementation of programs overseen by the Department’s Sustainability Unit, specifically within the Bottle Redemption Program. This position is multi-faceted and will conduct a variety of different activities as part of program implementation including licensing, compliance assistance, inspection, and enforcement. The position provides technical assistance to the regulated community, which includes small businesses in Maine, consumer goods companies, and additional private sector entities doing business in Maine, to assist them in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements of the program, and work towards improving program efficiency. The position may also assist with other materials management initiatives being undertaken by municipalities, non-profits, and the private sector. Specific tasks include the following: review and approval of license and registration applications; field compliance inspections; compliance assistance to brand owners, initiators of deposit, retailers, redemption centers, and contracted agents; review and analysis of program data and operations; management of grant awards; and initiation of enforcement actions as needed. Work is performed under limited supervision. Statewide travel is required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.

    Preference will be given to applicants with the following skills or experience:

    + Knowledge of Maine's solid waste management programs and systems.

    + Knowledge of data collection systems and applications.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    + Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

    + Ability to identify and analyze issues, reach logical conclusions, and make sound recommendations/decisions.
