Minimum qualifications:

+ Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience

+ 15 years of software engineering experience

+ Experience with technical innovation in one or more of the relevant domains (e.g., distributed systems, information retrieval, resource optimization) in a cross-functional enterprise

+ Experience with thought leadership, identifying and designing problems commensurate with Principal Engineer scope and difficulty

Preferred qualifications:

+ An advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a similar technical field is strongly desired

+ 20 years of software engineering experience

+ Experience with cross-organizational collaboration and influencing other teams' directions and road maps

+ Experience delivering successfully within time sensitive timelines

+ Ability to go deep technically and solve complex engineering problems

+ Excellent organization, prioritization, and written and verbal communication skills.

Core Data is responsible for data at Google, working closely with teams across the company to serve their data needs. The Core Data product suite offers end-to-end data management solutions, infrastructure, and foundations for Google products operating at scale, including flagship products (e.g., Search, Ads, YouTube, and Geo).

As a Principal Engineer, you will play a vital role by providing essential technical oversight for Data Indexing Infrastructure (DII), a critical area of the Information Retrieval tech stack that supports both traditional search and AI applications. Recognized as a leading expert in indexing and large distributed systems, you will guide technical decision-making for multiple global/regional teams. Your expertise also contributes to shaping the long-term direction and strategy for numerous Product Areas/functions.

These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. + Look forward, guide how the IR stack (and indexing, as a component thereof) handles data for ML training applications, atop traditional IR ones.

+ Mentor and grow Data Indexing tech leads, with a particular focus on improving and maintaining system health.

+ Work across the entire Core Data team to help define and ensure that Data Indexing participates in a coherent set of end-to-end Core Data product offerings.

+ Work with product management and customer engagement teams to ensure that indexing infrastructure supports current and future customer needs, working toward the future state as much as possible given current vantage point.
