GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Plans and coordinates speech/language services and staff. Performs skilled technical work in the evaluation and treatment of persons with speech/language disorders. Performs related work as required.
DISTINGIUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS
+ Under the clinical supervision of the speech/language senior and the general supervision of the Relates Services Coordinator, an employee in this class is responsible for the comprehensive diagnostic and management services of persons with functional and organic communication disorders, as well as the supervision of speech services and staff.
+ Work includes evaluation procedures necessary to determine speech/language disorders as well as functional level with regard to receptive/expressive language.
+ Therapy is prescribed through written reports, conferences, and observation of techniques and employed and results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Performing the following tasks may place you at risk for acquiring Hepatitis B virus.
+ Responsible for prescriptions and maintenance of augmentative speech aides and peripheral equipment
+ Assists in planning and coordinating in-services training for staff, parents, and others in the various phases of the speech/language therapy program
+ Participates in staff conferences to evaluate, advise and plan proper methods of treatment of students with speech/language disorders
+ Assisting in overseeing the comprehensive management of student records, with regards to status and treatment procedures
+ Reviews and checks all written work for accuracy and appropriateness
+ Preforms all of the work-related tasks of speech/language pathologist, i.e., diagnostics, therapeutic services and maintenance of comprehensive records
+ Positions and transfers students as necessary
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILTIES
+ Ability to plan, assign and assist in the clinical supervision of the speech department
+ Good knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and aides used in speech/language therapy
+ Good knowledge of augmentative communication systems and aids, i.e., signs, symbols, electronic prosthetic devices
+ Good knowledge of current literature and sources of information concerning the speech/language therapy field
+ Skilled in planning, evaluating, and demonstrating therapeutic exercise and in dealing effectively with difficult personality problems
+ Ability to evaluate speech/language and communication disorders and to determine the proper length and type of therapy
+ Demonstrate skill in generating professional reports, i.e., diagnostics, case summaries, etc.
+ Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting techniques
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS
+ N.Y State Certificate as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped
+ Graduate of an accredited university with a Master's degree in Speech Pathology, including 375 hours of supervised, clinical experience within the training institution or one of its cooperating programs
+ Possession of a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology issued by the American Speech and Hearing Association
+ Possession of a license in Speech Pathology used by the State of New York
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
+ Candidate must possess a valid NYS Driver's License at the time of hire, must maintain the NYS license for the duration of employment, and if they were to drive their own vehicle on the Agency business, adhere to the Agency Feet Safety Driver's Policy/Procedures
+ Documentation of a current Mantoux tuberculosis test must be provided prior to the beginning of employment and annually thereafter
+ A candidate for this position is considered to have a regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with consumers and must undergo a criminal background check prior to assuming their job responsibilities
+ A minimum of 15 hours of staff development training is required annually
