    DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    This position in environmental engineering focuses on statewide permitting and related tasks within the Safe Drinking Water (SDW) Program. Key responsibilities include aiding in the development, revision, and maintenance of the Department’s design manuals, regulations, and technical guidance pertinent to public water system permitting. A significant aspect of this role involves overseeing the permitting process for out-of-state bottled, vended, retail, and bulk hauling (BVRB) systems. Additionally, the position entails providing training and technical support regarding permitting activities to the regulated community, engineering consultants, and Department personnel. All work is conducted under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, ensuring adherence to professional standards.

     

    The role typically requires the application and interpretation of regulatory standards, alongside the implementation of established engineering design principles. A solid understanding of public water supply treatment systems and technologies is essential for success in this position. By ensuring that public water systems are effectively planned, designed, constructed, and operated in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and its regulations, this role plays a vital part in promoting public health and safety objectives within the SDW Program. If the position is filled as an Environmental Engineering Trainee, the incumbent will undergo a 12-month training period designed to equip them with the necessary skills to fulfill the responsibilities of an Environmental Engineering Specialist, with all work products subject to supervisory review prior to release.

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:

    + Full-time employment

    + Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.

    + Start time is flexible

    + Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

    + Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,678.00 (before taxes).

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

    + Successful completion of the training program for Environmental Engineering Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) ; or

    + One year of professional experience in environmental engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or in any engineering field that includes or is supplemented by 9 credits in environmental engineering; or

    + Two years of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or

    + One year of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

    + Graduate study in environmental engineering or in a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
