Position Summary
Refinery Value Chain Optimization (RVCO) has an opening for the position of Planning & Optimization Engineer. This position will report to the Value Chain Optimization Director - South. The candidate should expect to perform in an advisory role, work in a team setting with a wide variety of professionals and handle multiple priorities. To be successful, the candidate should be highly motivated with strong organizational, interpersonal, communication skills, and the ability to distill complex concepts into a concise narrative required for stakeholder education. The successful candidate will provide consulting support factoring in the entire value chain to the South Economics and Planning groups and the Commercial Organization.
Key Responsibilities
+ Manages the commercial aspects of regional refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
+ Demonstrates an advanced understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics for multiple refineries. Able to mentor junior engineers in planning and optimization strategies.
+ Collaborate with Commercial and Refining organizations in the development and execution of Refining Value Chain operating plans to maximize value to MPC. Must be able to drive results to ensure short term and local operating plans are successfully executed, make decisions to resolve routine problems, and evaluate strategic opportunities
+ Assist in the development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of various modeling, optimization, scheduling, reporting, lost opportunity tracking, and analysis tools and train others on the use of these tools
+ Utilize newly developed tools and collaborate in cross-organizational teams to optimize feedstock selection, logistics, operating plans, and product distribution and placement. As necessary, use Regional LP model to optimize the prompt regional plan
+ Understands how regional plans for multiple refineries are developed, optimized, and executed for multiple refineries using linear programming simulation models. Modifies production plans as needed to adjust to demand/margin changes. Accurately changes modeling constraints to match real life refinery operating constraints. Manages local refinery forecasting independently
+ Leads end-to-end evaluation of buy-or-make cases, from data gathering to final recommendation. Develops sophisticated economic models and sensitivity analyses to assess risk and uncertainty. Collaborates with trading to align strategies and optimize outcomes. Interfaces with refinery leadership to communicate recommendations and gain alignment.
+ Assists managing business risk with timely facilitation and alignment between key stakeholders
+ Works with other regional advisors on operating strategies and regional optimization planning
+ Manages project support cases independently. Possesses a deep understanding of refinery processes and commercial implications. Capable of analyzing complex data, identifying trends, and proposing solutions autonomously.
+ Understands local refinery deliverables and can effectively manage independently. Is trained on some refinery scheduling desks, uses APS to coordinate local refinery material balances and optimizes to improve refinery operating plans. Actively pushing execution of operating strategies to ensure compliance with monthly operating plans and changing economics.
+ Develop a depth of understanding of all South refineries (GVL/GBR), particularly their operating/logistical constraints and economic drivers
Education and Experience
Planning & Optimization Engineer
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
+ Three (3) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.
Senior Planning & Optimization Engineer
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.
+ Seven (7) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.
