The Norris and Dorothy Haring Center for Research and Training in Inclusive Education grew out of 50 years of groundbreaking work in special education at the Experimental Education Unit. The Haring Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Principal Research Scientist. Reporting to the Haring Center Director (Dr. Kathleen Artman Meeker), the Research Scientist will work with the Haring Center team to design, implement, analyze, and disseminate applied research related to inclusion and school-based supports for children with disabilities. This role will also serve as a subject matter expert in this area and will produce customized technical trainings and assistance to external partners and collaborators in the field, oversee the conceptualization and implementation of research and evaluation activities, and orchestrate internal and external communications and outreach efforts as they relate to this initiative. This position will include developing new lines of applied research and evaluation, seeking new funding across state, regional, federal, and philanthropic sources, and building collaborative opportunities across the state of Washington and the region. The Principal Research Scientist will work with colleagues and students from multiple disciplines and, in addition to demonstrating disciplinary excellence, must be able to work collaboratively across disciplines.
This position requires someone with a broad knowledge about school-based mental health practices, prevention and implementation research, inclusive special education practices, tiered systems of support, state and federal policies, and initiatives on supporting the educational workforce and school-based inclusion. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to work with communities and students from diverse backgrounds holding a range of worldviews. This is a grant-based appointment and is contingent on the continued availability of funds. The position is a 100% FTE. Extension of this appointment may be possible, dependent upon available funding.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** **Project Development and Strategic Partnership Building
+ Play a leadership role in identification and acquisition of funding across an array of funding sources (grants, contracts, gifts)
+ Strengthen partnerships with and between educational service districts, school districts, and the Haring Center
+ Develop technical proposals and research materials, tools, and products
+ Publish research reports, manuscripts, and external products with colleagues from UW and other institutions.
+ Lead symposia, chair committees or working groups, and influence the regional and national agenda on social, emotional, and behavioral health services and supports in schools **Project Implementation**
+ Conduct high quality, impactful applied research in school-based mental health and social emotional development
+ Provide technical leadership for the Haring Center on tiered systems of support and the integration of social and academic supports
+ Develop and maintain a strong record of product dissemination across multiple audiences (educators, policy makers, families)
+ Define staff needs, oversee staffing and hiring for complex projects
+ Manage multiple complex research and evaluation projects
+ Oversee and maintain the Human Subjects application, approval, and renewal process and other university requirements for ethical research with youth
+ Independently manage project reporting as required by finders
+ Oversee complex staffing and project management tasks across projects.
+ Define project scopes, maintain budget and reporting requirements, and interface with funders (project officers, etc.)
+ Hire, supervise, mentor and train junior staff and graduate students **Research and Impact Development**
+ Collaborate across parts of the Haring Center and the UW to identify strategic opportunities to advance the mission of the organizations
+ Provide leadership in major intellectual development activities
+ Contribute major independent advances that lead to improved practices in schools
+ Provide service to the field and leadership as evidenced by service on advisory boards, invited talks, and/or leadership roles in national professional organizations. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Ph.D. in Special Education, psychology, education, or related field and 6 years' experience in applied research, product development and training in education. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Distinguished record of applied research, resulting in widely used products, training materials, and long-term partnerships with schools and districts
+ Proven success securing and administering external funding
+ Demonstrated ability to work across diverse groups and contribute to an inclusive community.
+ Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff
+ Knowledge of and experience in school-based academic and behavioral services
+ Excellent written and verbal interpersonal communication skills
+ Ability to travel as needed to support grant and contract activities and training
+ Well organized, punctual **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Experience with program evaluation
+ Experience with qualitative, quantitative, or design based research methodology
+ Experience with designing and delivering professional development and technical assistance
