• AdventHealth Tampa, a faith-based not-for-profit 626-bed tertiary-level acute care hospital located in the uptown district of Tampa, Florida, specializes in advanced cardiovascular medicine, neuroscience and neurology, digestive health, orthopedics, women’s services, pediatrics, oncology, endocrinology, bariatrics, wound healing, sleep medicine and general surgery including minimally invasive and robot-assisted procedures. GME programs on the hospital campus currently include general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine and transitional year.

• AdventHealth Tampa is home to the renowned AdventHealth Pepin Heart Institute, a recognized leader in cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and leading-edge research – caring for Tampa Bay’s hearts for over 35 years.

Patel Research Institute, also located at AdventHealth Tampa, leads the way in clinical and academic research in the areas of neuroscience, cardiovascular medicine, advanced surgery and more – contributing valuable knowledge that leads to tomorrow’s cures for conditions such as heart failure, cancer and other diseases.

The role** **you’ll** **contribute:

Prepares and maintains the surgical area, scrubs and is first assistant to the physician during procedures, assists the RN in technical functions related to patient care in the OR and assists in the training of others and functions as a resource within the department.

**The value** **you’ll** **bring to the team** :

1. Positioning the patient:

• The surgeon shall convey the exact position that will give the best exposure for the surgical procedure. The surgical assistant will carry out this order. Consideration will be given to the patient’s comfort and safety.

• Points of pressure shall be padded: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, and axillary region.

2. Providing visualization of the operative site by the following:

• Appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding

• Packing with sponges

• Digital manipulation of tissue

• Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging

3. Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis

Permanent:

• Clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue

• Tying and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue

• Applying hemostatic clips

• Placing local hemostatic agents

Temporary:

• Applying tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of the indications/contraindications for use with knowledge of side effects of extended use

• Applying vessel loops

• Applying non-crushing clamps

• Applying direct digital pressure

Qualifications

The** **expertise** **and** **experiences** **you’ll** **need to succeed:

• High School education or equivalent

• Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Course

• Able to precept and act as resource person and preceptor in multiple surgical specialties

• Minimum three years’ experience as as a CST/CFA (CST experience calculated at ½ years experience).

• Specialist in at least 2 major surgical specialties (Orthopedics and Neurosurgery/Spine) and Robotics.

• Completion of Certified Surgical Assisting Program

• Certification as a First Assistant by one of the following:

• National Board of Surgical Technician and Surgical Assistant (NBSTA) **or** American Board of Surgical Assistant. (ABSA) **or** National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistant (NCCSA)

• American Health BLS
