    Overview

     

    The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

     

    The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division (EIBD) is one of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s most innovative teams. Our mission is to provide multi-disciplinary solutions to energy challenges that have impacts on a national scale.

     

    The Energy Policy, Economics and Planning Group develops methods for analyzing economic and societal impacts of energy systems and defines new planning frameworks that speed the deployment of a modernized energy system. We work closely with subject matter experts across the broader Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Division to support the Nation’s transition to a sustainable, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through innovation and actionable solutions.

     

    The selected candidate will work in our PNNL Portland office 3-5 days per week. Candidate may telework up to 2 days per week with the ability to come into the office on short notice.

    Responsibilities

    The Energy Policy, Economics and Planning Group is seeking a Post Masters Research Associate to support a portfolio of electric grid planning research. Successful candidates will have a strong collaborative background, and experience analyzing energy systems through engineering, policy, and economic approaches. The selected candidate will be expected to support a range of analytical, technical, and written research in support of a more resilient and secure grid. The position will work on complex problems in policy, technology deployment, and technical and strategic stakeholder engagement by integrating solutions in interdisciplinary domains. This position will support Department of Energy and Department of Defense Energy Resilience programs.

    The successful candidate will be accountable to:

    + Project Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project and field procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget.

    + The Group Leader and Team Leader, for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and project execution.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Master’s Degree in energy systems engineering or a closely related field.

    + Knowledge and experience with data analysis, geospatial analysis, decision analysis using Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS, or programs such as R or Python.

    + Experience in energy planning, energy modeling, renewable energy deployment, hydrogen technologies and electricity markets.

    + Experience analyzing techno-economic data to support energy transition planning.

    + Excellent writing skills and a demonstrated record of contributions to technical reports and/or journal articles.

    + Strong verbal communication and presentation skills with demonstrated record delivering presentations to technical and non-technical audiences.

    + Demonstrations of a collaborative approach to problem-solving and experience working with inter-disciplinary and geographically distributed teams.

    + Prior internship experience at a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory is preferred.

    Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements

     

    In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

    For foreign national candidates:

    If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.

    Mandatory Requirements

    Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. If you are offered a position at PNNL and currently have any affiliation with the government of one of these countries, you will be required to disclose this information and recuse yourself of that affiliation or receive approval from DOE and Battelle prior to your first day of employment.
