    POSITION SUMMARY

    The search for the chief of the Division of Digestive Health occurs at a pivotal moment given the significant commitment of UHealth to elevate digestive health as a luminary specialty in the expansion of the health system. Within this framework, the chief will be a visionary and broad-gauged leader able to elevate an already strong division to the top tier of programs nationally and internationally. A critical driver of this growth will be a committed, transformative philanthropic gift. These resources will enable the chief to accelerate the growth of the division to be the premier destination for care—from routine visits to the treatment of the most complex diagnoses. Key areas for differentiated strategic growth will be in expanding strong programs in Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, advanced endoscopy, and motility, among others. The chief’s ability to leverage collaborations with other divisions and departments for truly leading patient care and discovery will further elevate an already strong division.

     

    The chief leads all aspects of the division and, in partnership with the chair and faculty, maps a strategy for growth. A culture of innovation, passion, and opportunity defines the tightly interconnected Miller School, and Health System, and the chief will share the ethos of collaboration, communication, and fairness. The division chief will lead with the highest degree of integrity, thoughtfulness, inclusion, and creativity. A central institutional priority is to create a diverse and inclusive community; therefore, sustaining a culture of belonging and equity, as well as the recruitment, advancement, vitality, and retention of women and groups underrepresented in medicine.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    + Shape and execute an overarching strategy for differentiated excellence.

    + Sustain a culture characterized by generosity, integrity, constructive interactions, mentoring, and respect for diversity and differences among members of the community.

    + In partnership with the department, JHM and Miami VAMC, drive program growth in a competitive marketplace.

    + Grow the research and scholarship activities in the division.

    + Serve on the Department of Medicine leadership committees.

    + Manage the division’s finances, including budgeting and resource allocation to ensure a margin that supports the mission.

    + Develop consistent, transparent norms for high performance within the division in clinical activity, research, education, and service missions.

    + Ensure clinical support for new faculty members with peer mentoring from physicians with a similar practice.

    + Lead division planning and execution of recruitment for faculty, including the search committee process and documentation, following Department of Medicine processes to meet UHealth’s requirements.

    + Conduct timely, in-person annual reviews for each faculty member with written documentation of past performance and future goals.

    + Support career development for individual faculty members.

    + Oversee the division’s participation in Department of Medicine education programs.

    + Oversee the division’s accredited fellowship training program(s).

    + Build and strengthen educational programs and serve as mentors and teachers to medical students, residents, and fellows.

    + Recruit faculty to the division and assume shared responsibility alongside administrative executives for hiring other professional and support staff for the division.

    IDEAL EXPERIENCE

    Leadership in an Academic Medical Center SettingProgressive administrative experience in digestive health, ideally in an academic medical center and/or medical school. A record of accomplishment working across organizational boundaries of like-minded units and generating support for shared priorities will be an asset in leading the division.

     

    Clinical EminenceExperience building genuinely excellent primary and specialized patient care services in multiple locations. Empowering teams of physicians and professionals to improve access and quality, leading with a mindset of maximizing partnerships and alignment with a broader system.

     

    Research and DevelopmentThe capability to oversee complex research programs, and experience building and achieving durable funding models that support science.

     

    Personal Scholarship and MentorshipA record of successfully funded research and the ability to enable academic success of others.

     

    Academic ExcellenceNational recognition in the field of digestive health or liver disease, as evidenced by high-impact, outstanding research, mentoring, clinical excellence, and involvement in academic societies at a national level.

     

    Education / Training / CertificationAn M.D. or M.D./Ph.D.; board-certified in gastroenterology. Candidates must be licensed or eligible for medical licensure in Florida.

    + Develops initiatives that benefit stakeholders mutually and allow gastrointestinal medicine to both expand and function cohesively across multiple sites.

    + Promotes collaboration and partnership among multiple parties across UHealth, the Miller School, and various institutes.
