    Salary Grade: NC06/Salary Range - $34,270.00 - $59,973.00.

     

    Positions 60024169 and 60024184 will be filled from this posting. You only need to apply once to be considered for both positions.

     

    This position will function as a VERT I - at the Greenville Equipment Shop in Pitt County. This is skilled mechanic work. The selected candidate will be expected to perform a range of tasks involving servicing and repair of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Employee may perform mechanical work at various levels. In addition, the operation of a fuel and lube truck, to include the fueling of trucks and equipment, ensuring the proper fluid levels (engine oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, PM’s etc.), lubrication of all grease joints and the ability to keep detailed and accurate records of fuel and oil dispensed daily. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform basic mechanical work within the following systems: Preventive Maintenance, Tires & Tubes, Wheels & Rims, Cranking Systems, Lighting Systems, Cooling Systems, Fuel Systems, and Hydraulic Systems.

     

    Note: Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Experience in the repair and replacement of tires.

    + Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.

    + Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench.

     

    Additional Expectations

     

    Selected candidates will need the ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnose basic problems using basic diagnostic equipment, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. Employee will be expected to understand both written and oral instructions, move parts and materials necessary to repair and maintain equipment. Employee will need the ability to safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Employee will be expected to work in indoor and outdoor environments. Employee will need the ability to demonstrate commitment to providing a safe working environment by leading by example. Employee will be expected to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Employee will need the ability to read schematics, diagrams, and sketches and possess the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects. Employee will be expected to perform heavy lifting. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. This position may also require the selected candidate to operate the fuel truck Low-Boy if needed.

     

    Employees must operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed.

     

    Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

     

    High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualification

     

    May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
