    Duties Description The Division of Air Resources (DAR) relies heavily on the expertise of Research Scientists for ambient monitoring, air quality modeling, and data analysis to inform air quality planning efforts, support implementation of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and safeguard public health. Under the general supervision of a Section Chief (Research Scientist IV) and working in coordination with other Research Scientists in DAR, the Research Scientists II will work on various multi-disciplinary tasks, including:Applied Research and Data Analysis•Ensure that ambient monitoring data are of the highest quality to protect public health, meet DAR’s research needs, and satisfy all reporting requirements and objectives.•Evaluate and interpret ambient monitoring data from routine networks, special studies, community-level projects, and low-cost sensors using statistical and data management tools such as ArcGIS, R, and Python.•Develop data analysis and communication tools to identify potential air pollution sources to help prioritize emission reduction strategies.•Coordinate research efforts with Research Scientists, Engineers, Environmental Chemists, and Air Pollution Meteorologists across DAR.•Present findings at professional conferences and in scientific journals.•Attend workshops and trainings and follow the latest scientific literature on emerging contaminants, new measurement technologies, emissions test methods, and data analysis techniques.Program Coordination and Staff Outreach•Develop scripts to improve data management and analysis.•Track EPA’s reviews of National Ambient Air Quality Standards for criteria air pollutants such as particulate matter and ozone. Research and evaluate Short-term Guideline Concentrations and Annual Guideline Concentrations for toxic air pollutants.•Provide data products to DAR staff to support state implementation plans and air quality forecasting.•Provide guidance and trainings to regional, laboratory, field, and Central Office staff on data analysis methods and air dispersion modeling.•Supervise and mentor junior level Research Scientists and seasonal DAR staff as needed.Technical Assistance to Partner Organizations•Participate in multistate committee meetings and workshops (e.g. NESCAUM. NADP, NACAA) to communicate NY’s priorities and interests.•Serve on one or more Project Advisory Committees for NYSERDA’s Energy-Focused Environmental Research program to advise on air quality and health research in NY, as needed.•Respond to inquiries and data requests from other agencies, research organizations, and the public.

     

    Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree and three years of professional research experience in an appropriate field; or a master's degree in an appropriate field and two years of professional research experience in that field; or a doctorate in an appropriate field and one year of such experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. A Master of Science or higher degree in Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science, Public Health, Epidemiology, Environmental Health, or related field is preferred.Area of Specialty is Air Pollution. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following fields: atmospheric science, environmental chemistry, toxicology, risk communication, statistical analysis and interpretation of air quality data, ambient air quality measurements, and air quality modeling.Essential Functions: •Must be able to prepare detailed, technically accurate, well written reports.•Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills to present results and analysis.•Must have knowledge and experience in the use of higher-level computer programs.•Must be able to travel to meetings and conferences.

     

    Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Travel may be required.Overtime may be required.
