Job Description:
45% - Communications, Publicity and Advertising
+ Develops and implements the Center's overall communication strategy, including both electronic and print communications, and develops communication schedules.
+ Gathers speaker and program information and develops written descriptions.
+ Disseminates information via e-mails and flyers, website and KU calendars, social media, and other publicity outlets both on and off campus.
+ Develops and submits press releases to promote events and highlight faculty and graduate student achievements.
+ Develops and produces fall and spring issues of the unit’s magazine.
+ Coordinates off-site printing of publication materials, including the Hall Center’s Year in Review and biannual Humanities for all publications, ensures printers receive materials as sent, and tracks production from inception to mailing.
+ Compiles and maintains a variety of mailing lists for various purposes.
+ Provides copyediting for media content developed by others.
+ Identifies other publicity opportunities and continually refines communication strategies in consultation with Assistant Director and other Hall Center staff.
+ Acts as the first point of contact with University Relations.
+ Attends meetings with various partner organizations on and off campus, such as the KU Communicators Council and reports relevant details to Assistant Director.
15% - Website Maintenance
+ Responsible for keeping the Hall Center’s website current through regular updating and maintenance.
+ Communicates KU-level website changes to the Hall Center administration.
+ Generates all website content, including calendars, event and programming descriptions, and Hall Center fellow and personnel information.
+ Responsible for transition of website to university-mandated platforms as necessary.
+ Develops and selects appropriate modules and attends university training sessions to keep up-to-date on all website standards changes.
15% - Social Media Messaging
+ Administers all Hall Center social media accounts.
+ Regularly adds new content.
+ Develops a strategy for increasing the Center’s social media presence and using social media as a tool to reach new audiences.
+ Assists with the implementation of new social media applications.
+ Ensures all social media adheres to KU public affairs and media standards.
10% - External Relations
+ Works with the Associate Director to develop communication content in various forms for Hall Center donors and other key external constituencies.
+ Attends Hall Center events and drafts short, accessible lecture summaries for inclusion in the Year in Review.
+ Generates content, designs layout, and coordinates production of the Year in Review.
+ Produces Weekly and Monthly Humanities Updates, and various other communications via the Emma e-mail marketing software, and other key communication materials for the Hall Center's Friends organization.
10% - Event & Administrative Support
+ Provides general administrative, hospitality, and facilities assistance at Hall Center events that require full staffing.
+ Serves as backup A/V support staff for Hall Center events, including, as necessary, set-up of A/V equipment, monitoring its use, and troubleshooting.
+ Serves as occasional backup for the reception desk as necessary.
5% - Other Duties as Assigned

Required Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or relevant field, plus minimum of one (1) year related professional experience.
2. Familiarity with the general scope of humanities departments and disciplines as evidenced in application materials.
3. Work experience that required detail orientation and following instructions as shown in application materials.
4. Excellent research, writing, and editing skills as demonstrated in application materials.
5. Work experience that required strong computer skills, including experience with word processing, database utilization, email marketing software, and basic graphic design skills as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree or PhD in humanities discipline.
2. Two (2) years of communications experience.
3. Magazine layout and graphic design experience and/or experience with desktop publishing as evidenced in application materials.
4. Experience maintaining social media platforms in a professional capacity as shown in application materials.
5. Experience preparing electronic communications using Emma as evidenced in application materials.
6. Experience with the Microsoft Office suite, Photoshop, InDesign, and Drupal as shown in application materials.
7. Experience with photography and videography as evidenced in application materials.
8. Familiarity with Mac computers and software as evidenced in application materials.
9. Experience interacting professionally with faculty, administrators, and the general public in person, by telephone, and via email as shown in application materials.
10. Experience working in a higher education setting as evidenced in application materials.
Position Overview:
The Hall Center for the Humanities is one of eleven designated research centers on the University of Kansas campus. The Hall Center supports, creates, and disseminates research in the humanities. It provides an intellectual hub for scholars in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences, fostering interdisciplinary conversation across the university. Through its public programming, the Hall Center makes visible the significance and relevance of humanities research. It engages a wide range of communities across the state in dialogue about pressing local, national, and global issues that humanities research can illuminate.
This a full-time 12-month position that is contingent on funding. Yearly performance evaluations are assessed for position continuation. The Hall Center Communications Coordinator reports to the Hall Center Assistant Director. The Communications Coordinator will provide vital support to the Hall Center’s faculty development and public humanities programming goals by assisting with the creation and dissemination of information about the Center’s mission, accomplishments, public events, seminars, workshops, and other programs.
