    JOB SUMMARY

    The Director of Student Support Services will have the primary responsibility of providing leadership and direction for the Muckleshoot Department of Education (DOE) overseeing all programs Birth to 22 years old including: Special Education Services, 504 Accommodations and Gifted Talented programs. This position is expected to work cooperatively with all leaders in the DOE in providing leadership in the areas of program compliance, curriculum, instruction, communication, staff development, post-secondary transition, and fiscal management to link Support Services with general education programs.

    MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    + Implement, monitor and analyze the effectiveness of students support services including special education services, gifted & talented program and 504 accommodations, including staff evaluations.

    + Implement all policies and regulations related to students with disabilities as required by Tribal Ordinance, the BIA/BIE or Washington State where applicable. Maintain required documentation and submit timely required reports.

    + Coordinate, implement and evaluate referral process, care team, special education services, gifted talented program, special education service providers, testing/assessments, staffing to meet the needs of individual students, secondary transition services, 504 plans and accommodations.

    + Provide technical assistance and facilitate in service training for staff related to meeting individual student needs including: classroom accommodations, test accommodations, behavior modification programs, referral process, FAE/FAS, ADHD.

    + Coordinate programs, practices, expectations, processes and transitions between Department of Education (DOE) programs and building to serve student support and fidelity of programs, IEPs and 504 Plans.

    + Provide and facilitate workshop opportunities for parents related to understanding their child’s individual needs including but not limited to: parenting, FAE/FAS, ADHD, ASD, EBD, and learning disabilities.

    + Maintain student support services compliance requirements for MIT, the BIE/BIA, or Washington State where applicable which includes but not limited to: IEP process & documentation, NASIS recording, portfolios, gifted talented process , 504 plans and all required and related documentation.

    + Provide leadership in Care Team and IEP meetings. Actively involved in the pre-referral, creation, review and implementation of all IEP’s, 504 plans and gifted talented plans.

    + Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides and presents reports for administrative purposes to a variety of audiences and/or leadership/legislative bodies when requested.

    + Directs the activities and evaluate assigned Special Education and Gifted-Talented Program staff.

    + Assume primary oversight including but not limited to: developing, reviewing, revising, and balancing budgets for staffing and expenditures for all IDEA Part B and Part C funding in conjunction with Tribal Finance, Department of Education, and each programs assigned leader.

    + Coordinate with all public and private schools providing services to Muckleshoot Tribal Members and/or students transferring between programs to maintain high quality services and support for our students and staff.

    + Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities

    EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    + Master’s Degree in Special Education or Administration

    + Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement or valid Washington State Teaching certificate or Washington State Administrator certificate

    + Five (5) years’ experience as a K-12 Special Education Teacher

    + Five (5) years’ experience in Special Education Administration or related field

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    + Knowledge of Gifted and Talented, Special Education Regulations and Laws.

    + Effective behavior management techniques, instructional methods and curriculum options to meet individual needs of students enrolled.

    + Proficiency in necessary equipment to perform job including computer, copy machine, fax machine and telephone.

    + Proficient and professional use of reading, writing and oral communications.

    + Effective oral and written communication with parents/guardians, students, staff, administrators and community members that demonstrates awareness of the unique environment in which she/he will be working.

    + Ability to design and implement IEP’s and individual student plans for students having a wide range of academic, intellectual, social or physical abilities.

    + Ability to work with students and families in a positive, confident and culturally sensitive manner.

    + Ability to learn and work within a native community.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    The working conditions described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. The employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to walk, drive a motor vehicle and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

     

    Licenses or Certifications Required

     

    A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe. A valid Washington State Teaching certificate or Washington State Administrator certificate required upon hire.
