    The material handler in shipping and receiving verifies and keeps records on incoming and/or outgoing shipments and prepares items for shipment, including parts and whole goods shipping. Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and/or outgoing shipments to verify information against bill of lading, invoices, orders or other records and posts to open orders of suppliers. Responsible for the accuracy of shipping documents, and verifying the receiving receipts with open orders. May be asked to guide and train new material handlers on the ship/receive process.

    Essential Functions of the Job:

    1. Performs shipping and receiving duties, such as receive all materials and check for quality and quantity as called for by purchase orders and corresponding packing lists; distribute materials to proper locations; coordinate and organize paperwork such as shipping lists, packing lists, and purchase orders.

    2. Support the shipment of goods produced and the received goods and supplies to be used in or to aid in the production/storage of goods destined for sale to our customer base.

    3. May be responsible for making freight arrangements for per customer or purchase order detail.

    4. Report defective materials or questionable conditions to the supervisor or purchasing department.

    5. Keep an adequate supply of shipping materials on hand at all times. Coordinate the order of needed supplies with the supervisor or lead.

    6. Maintain the equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition and follow prescribed safety regulations.

    7. Assist in counting of physical inventory.

    8. Weigh and count items for distribution within plant to ensure conformance to Company standards.

    9. Prepare heavy equipment as well as delicate materials for foreign and domestic shipments and to conform with shipping specifications and requirements.

    10. Organize warehouse and work area for orderliness at all times.

    11. Safe use of material handling equipment, to include fork lift, overhead crane, etc.

    12. Other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

    + Must be able to read and interpret various shipping documents.

    + Requires ability to perform basic math and computer data entry and inventory management concepts.

    + Requires ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.

    + Must be capable of estimating weight, and use that information to calculate the cost of shipping.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

    + Knowledge and basic understanding of inventory management software.

    + Requires familiarity with proper packaging methods and various forms used and required by the major freight carriers. Must have ability to fill out bills of lading.

    + Must be familiar with the most common material handling equipment and be able to become a licensed forklift truck operator.

    + Must have the ability to implement and maintain the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the shipping and receiving department.

    + Requires use of appropriate personal protective equipment including but not limited to: safety glasses, hearing protection and safety shoes.

    + Able to work overtime and/or including weekends as production scheduled dictate.

    + Must be willing to operate a crane.

    Education and Experience:

    + Requires a minimum of 2 years of previous shipping, receiving or material handling experience; preferably in a metal manufacturing production environment.
