    Alamo Group Inc. is accepting applications to fill a **R&D Controls Engineer** at its Advanced Technology Center located in Huntsville, AL.

     

    Under general direction, the R&D Controls Engineer will collaborate with the Alamo Group Advanced Technology Center and business unit Engineers to evaluate and design advanced technology products. The R&D Controls Engineer will design various electrical harnesses and control systems, calibrations and algorithms needed for electrification efforts of Alamo Group business units’ products.

    The R&D Controls Engineer will:

    + Collaborate with team to learn new skills, knowledge and apply to projects producing results greater than individual efforts and ability.

    + Learn and acquire skills to augment and fill gaps to perform essential functions.

    + Design, develop with a team all aspects of electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery.

    + Design and integrate various hybrid electric systems into truck chassis and other Alamo Group business unit products.

    + Work in partnership with multiple business units to understand products and collaborate on solutions.

    + Design implement and tune control loops using PID, discrete time operations, ladder logic, scripting, and structured programming language.

    + Design and implement Human Machine Interfaces (HMI).

    + Harness design including high voltage harnesses and connectors.

    + Integrate generators and motors into vehicle systems.

    + Configure inverters and drives for electric drivetrains.

    + Drive design choices to maximize safety and value to the company.

    + Troubleshoot issues with hardware and processes.

    + Researches and continuously learns new technologies available with the goal of incorporating into current and new product designs.

    + Teach or instruct others to maintain systems produced by ATC.

    + Additional duties as assigned.

    The ideal candidate will have/be:

    + Must demonstrate the ability to work in a team, learn and adapt quickly to new information.

    + Must demonstrate a minimum of knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, CAN networks, electric vehicles or similar complex systems.

    + Experience using graphical programming environments like MATLAB, Simulink, CodeSys or similar to create control systems and HMI.

    + Experience with CAN Bus, CANopen, j1939, OBD, SPN, PGN, DTC SPN, and similar

    + Familiar with structured language programming and or software development operations

    + Experience with high and low voltage electric drive systems including motors, inverters and battery packs

    + Ability to read, interpret and create drawings, schematics, operator’s manuals, and assembly instructions

    + Ability to use hand tools such as rachet drivers, wrenches, hammers, punches, soldering irons, de-soldering tools, and a variety of crimpers.

    + Ability to perform basic measurements using tape measure, protractor, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring devices

    + Ability to perform basic measurements using multimeter, o-scope and other measuring devices

    + Skilled and proficient with the use of personal computers; including JDE, and standard office software (i.e., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, etc.)

    + Knowledge of setup and calibration of inverters

    + Excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Ability to communicate with various levels within the organization.

    + Strong planning and project management skills with the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects and priorities.

    + Demonstrated ability to provide timely, detailed, results oriented products.

    + Able to work irregular and/or long hours that may include weekends and/or holidays as project requirements dictate.

    + Able to travel independently by common air carrier and automobile including international travel

    + Able to maintain an insurable driving record

    Education and Experience:

    + Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field is required. Experience equivalent to a degree may be considered.

    + Minimum 2 years of previous experience in a vehicle or similar complex system, designing electrical systems or control systems.

    This position will typically spend some time in the field with products, sometime working in the office at a desk, and some time will be spent in the prototype shop working on equipment trouble shooting or building projects for the first time. Hands on work is expected along with use of shop technicians for tasks that do not require direct involvement.

     

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus. Standing, walking and some lifting while traveling and attending trade shows and demonstrations.
