    We are seeking a **_Research Technologist_** for the Erlebacher group within the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI) who will be responsible for technical management, installation, and upkeep of equipment, laboratory organization, financial duties including purchasing and bookkeeping, and development and implementation of safety protocols.

     

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    _Laboratory Management (85%)_

    + Provide technical knowledge and expertise for use of Erlebacher group equipment, including installation, operation, training, and maintenance including, but not limited to high temperature furnaces, including tube furnaces, vacuum furnaces, high-pressure furnace, and induction furnaces.

    + Mechanical polishing.

    + Chemical reactor apparatus.

    + Electron microscopy, XRF.

    + CNC Lathe, CNC Mill, and related machining equipment and accessories.

    + Serve as lab safety officer to ensure safe practices in the laboratories and compliance with all applicable university, federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations. Perform regular safety inspections.

    + Maintain a safe, clean, working environment, general cleaning and trash removal.

    + Train in the use of instruments and create instrument operating procedures.

    + Decommissioning of equipment.

    + Assist with technical, lab facility, and instrumentation issues and repairs, coordinating with the Facilities department and outside vendors, as needed.

    + And other duties and responsibilities as needed for the laboratory management of the Erlebacher group.

    Financial Management (10%)

    + Procure goods and services necessary for operation of the group.

    + Coordinate and schedule equipment services (e.g. installation, repair, purchase, delivery).

    + Reconcile procurement card purchases.

    + Evaluate and order consumable supplies for laboratory and instrumentation use.

    + Perform inventory management for the group and manage inventory lists.

    + And other duties and responsibilities as needed for the financial management of the group.

    _Education (5%)_

    + Assist group members with experiments, equipment design and construction, and sample preparation.

    + Train group members on safety related issues and incident response.

    + Maintain instrument training and operating procedures.

    + Evaluate laboratory exercises and recommend modifications/additions for continuous improvement.

    + All other duties and responsibilities as needed for the education and training needs of the group.

    _Internal and External Contacts_

    + Actively work with Professor Erlebacher, his group members, and collaborators. Participate, advise and consult in campus safety committee and laboratory coordinator meetings and activities.

    + Interface and consult with Health Safety & Environment. Interface with university Facilities and Maintenance, Fixed Assets and others as needed.

    Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities

    + Experience in operating laboratory equipment, ideally including several of the aforementioned instruments.

    + Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.

    + Basic understanding of budgeting and funds management.

    + Proficiency with office productivity software (Microsoft Office).

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor's Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field

    + Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience operating and maintaining scientific equipment.

    + Experience training in the use of scientific equipment.

     

    Classified Title: Research Technologist

    Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CC

    Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($40,950 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

    Employee group: Full Time

    Schedule: 37.5 hrs/wk, M-F

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity. Not all candidates will qualify for the highest salary in the range.
