Program Overview:
The Sallie Mae Internship program seeks to attract and develop exceptional early talent while adding value to our organization. Our goal is to tie academic learning into a practical business setting while fostering professional and personal growth within a student’s area of focus.
Over the course of the semester, interns will gain exposure to senior leaders, attend meetings, work alongside mentors, and receive valuable performance feedback.
What You'll Contribute:
The Sallie Mae Legal Department represents the legal interests of SLM Corporation, Sallie Mae Bank and all their affiliates, subsidiaries, and business units. The Department’s overall goal is to provide legal, practical, and business advice that facilitates the enterprise’s business objectives and minimizes risk. The Department is divided into practice areas including Banking/Regulatory, Litigation, Transaction Services, Labor and Employment, Corporate Secretary, and Finance. The Legal Grad Intern would receive assignments based on need, capacity, and interest, and would be matched with one or more in-house attorney “mentor(s),” who would facilitate organization of assignments and opportunities for development. The internship will be based in the Newark, DE office.
What You'll Do:
Daily Tasks:
+ Assist in preparing opinion letters or other advanced clerical duties;
+ Prepare and deliver written and oral presentations to supervising attorneys; and
+ Participate as a member of one or more legal teams supporting ongoing business priorities.
Project-Related Tasks:
+ Provide legal research supporting various projects, including licensing, validation, or survey projects;
+ Draft memoranda, briefs, motions, and other legal documents;
+ Review and update state and federal databases;
+ Assist with tracking proposed and enacted consumer and banking legislation;
+ Attend internal meetings and assist with ad hoc projects stemming from meetings; and
+ Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

What You Have:
Minimum education, skills and experience required.
Education:
+ Currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school
+ Level: Graduate (Law School)
+ Open to students who have completed their first or second year of law school
Experience:
+ Available to work up to 40 hours per week between 6/02/25 and 8/22/2025 – Summer
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Strong oral/written communication skills
+ Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills with individuals at all levels.
+ Excellent administrative skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and web-based applications.
+ Excellent research skills on legal databases (Pacer, Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg, etc.)
+ Strong follow through and multi-tasking skills, and attention to detail.
