    Description

    The Peer Navigator will provide effective and comprehensive support for participants with HIV/AIDS, or high risk for seroconversion, leading to the participant's successful linkage to community services and adherence to health care after leaving jail. Extensive field work, including home visits, may be required and candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

    + Providing appropriate and effective services leading to successful linkage and adherence to healthcare; willingness to follow a set project curriculum and report on progress.

    + Assisting and collaborating in conducting and developing comprehensive assessments and service plans; responsible for activities relating to healthcare retention.

    + In collaboration with other study staff, providing assistance in accessing primary medical care, and other necessary services for clients to increase their capacity for remaining in healthcare.

    + Providing crisis intervention to clients as needed.

    + Providing new client orientation to their neighborhood, including location of stores, hospitals, and other community services.

    + Willingness to learn case management principles and practices and learn about community resources.

    + Responsible, organized, effective, and efficient. Ability to perform multiple assignments simultaneously. Communication skills (active listening and strong verbal and written skills).

    + Community minded, patient, creative, flexible, compassionate, and culturally sensitive to persons living with HIV, or at risk for seroconversion, and severe and persistent homelessness and substance abuse issues

    + Ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with jail staff, clients, community agencies and the general public.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Familiarity with the criminal justice system, either through lived experience of being incarcerated or having friends/family incarcerated; or working in a jail setting. *While a criminal background check will be conducted, a personal history of incarceration does not necessarily disqualify a candidate for this position; in fact, a lived experience of incarceration is a preferred qualification.*

    + In recovery from drug and/or alcohol use disorder, OR familiar with drug and/or alcohol use disorder through having friends/family in recovery.

    + Familiarity about where to find HIV and PrEP services in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area.

    + Able to communicate in plain, clear English to persons with varying levels of education.

     

    NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
