    The Idaho Department of Labor is seeking a full-time Research Analyst, Supervisor to lead our Labor Economist Team.

     

    In this key role, you will supervise a team of six Labor Economists located across Idaho. This team serves as the department's primary experts in economic and labor market information, providing insights that help empower strategic and career decisions, business growth, job creation, and wage decisions throughout the state.

     

    As the Research Analyst, Supervisor, you will not only guide the team's efforts but also contribute directly by turning complex economic data into clear information for a diverse audience. This involves:

     

    + Leading and Supervising: Providing effective leadership and guidance to a geographically dispersed team of Labor Economists.

    + Economic Insight: Conducting your own research and analysis to develop insightful reports, presentations, and media communications on workforce and economic trends.

    + Clear Communication: Interpreting complex economic concepts and presenting them in an accessible way for the general public.

    + Collaboration: Fostering strong working relationships within the Department of Labor, other state and federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations like economic development groups.

    We are looking for someone with:

    + Proven experience in team leadership, especially with remote teams.

    + Strong abilities in planning, conducting, and coordinating complex research projects.

    + Expertise in analyzing economic data and developing meaningful insights.

    + Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.

    + Experience using data visualization tools to create informative dashboards.

    Example of Duties

    Team Leadership and Supervision:

    + Supervise the Labor Economist Team, a key unit within the Department's Research and Communications Bureau.

    + Plan, organize, and direct the activities of the team members.

    + Hire, train, and evaluate staff performance.

    + Develop and implement unit operating policies and procedures.

    + Recommend unit policies and procedures to departmental leadership.

    + Lead the team in the development and delivery of monthly economic situation briefings.

    + Potentially monitor the section/program budget.

    + Select staff, assign work, and evaluate performance.

    + Resolve problems involving customers, employers, and staff.

    Research and Analysis:

    + Contribute to the planning and execution of the department's research agenda.

    + Analyze the workforce information needs of stakeholders across various industries and sectors.

    + Conduct statistical analysis, interpret trends and study results, develop conclusions, and summarize research findings.

    + Evaluate the quantity and quality of service provided by the team's research efforts.

    + Identify problem areas in data or research and prepare and implement corrective action plans.

    + Review and update data to ensure the statistical accuracy of data files and reports.

    + Provide guidance for the compilation and/or review of research results in formats suitable for diverse users.

    + Review and approve draft reports of findings, identifying errors and problems.

    + Consult with users of research information on the current and potential applications of data and the research system.

    + Identify areas requiring follow-up research studies.

    Reporting and Dissemination of Information:

    + Oversee the provision of reliable labor market data and demographic insights.

    + Direct quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and validity of results in reports.

    + Develop and oversee the creation of media releases, respond to media inquiries, and potentially serve as a department spokesperson for media interviews on labor market and economic matters.

    + Ensure the accuracy and functionality of the labor market information website and its associated data tools, coordinating with IT and communication staff for development and maintenance.

    + Present or authorize the presentation of research results and insights to various stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, and the public.

    + Deliver presentations or testimony to legislative committees.

    + Plan, schedule, and direct unit activities, including coordination with information technology staff to develop new reports and data tools, as well as maintain existing ones.

    Collaboration and Other Duties:

    + Collaborate with the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), research, and communications teams.

    + Confer with department staff and other departments to assess research needs.

    + Assist in the management of the Workforce Information Grant.

    + Collaborate with partner agencies.

    Considerable knowledge of:

    + Modeling and trend analysis and simulation techniques

    Good knowledge of:

    + Supervisory practices

    Experience:

    + Planning and directing research and statistical projects and evaluating and presenting (orally and in writing) the results

    + Using and interpreting output of a statistical analysis software package

     

    Extra Credit: Although this is not required for this position, having experience may help.

     

    + Experience working with data visualization dashboards, methods and tools.

    + Experience with SQL database language and queries.

    + Considerable knowledge of Economics.
