General Statement
Montana State University’s Student Wellness seeks a health educator with an emphasis on substance misuse prevention and education to coordinate outreach and prevention services related to substance use. The position is housed in the new Student Wellness Center, MSU’s one stop shop for health and wellbeing. The Student Wellness area, within the MSU Student Success, is comprised of Campus Recreation, Counseling & Psychological Services, and Student Health Services. All of these departments are housed in the new 165,000 sq ft Student Wellness Center. This position reports to the Program Manager of Student Wellness Program Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
+ Work closely with supervisor to implement and evaluate campus-specific strategic plans for alcohol and other drug prevention based on assessment data.
+ Assist with online prevention education, Thriving Together, and support students in completing the required curriculum.
+ In coordination with the SW Program Manager, implement alcohol and drug education programming for students focused on harm reduction to reduce underage and high-risk drinking and cannabis or other recreational drug use/abuse.
+ Provide targeted prevention education to specific students groups including, but not limited to, residence halls, fraternities and sororities, and athletics.
+ Serve as a Narcan master trainer and lead Narcan training for the campus community.
+ Serve as the primary community support resource expert for substance misuse concerns and respond to resource requests from campus constituents in a timely manner.
+ Coordinate, facilitate and evaluate all on-campus alcohol education classes for student conduct referral program.
+ Implement Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students ( BASICS ) as relevant to MSU’s alcohol and drug education program.
+ Recruit, train and oversee student employees.
+ Support development of Student Wellness peer education training program which fosters resource engagement, targeted skill building, harm reduction and health enhancing behavior change.
+ Manage and deliver alcohol education programs, including meeting with students to review personalized feedback and conduct brief motivational interviewing.
+ Utilize data and outcomes to demonstrate progress toward Student Wellness goals and monitor trends of student behavior.
+ Participate in the delivery and assessment of Student Wellness health promotion activities.
+ Create/compile quarterly reports of data and assessment results specific to substance use and misuse
+ Assist SW Health Promotion Program Manager with data collection and report for Drug Free Schools and Campuses Act ( DFSCA ) Biennial Report.
+ Support student groups focused on recovery and provide guidance for their programming efforts.
+ Other duties as assigned by Health Promotion Program Manager or Associate Vice President for Student Wellness.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, public health, health education, behavioral sciences, higher education, or related field, or a combination of education and/or applicable experience.
+ Demonstrated professional experience in the area(s) of public health, alcohol and other drug misuse prevention and education.
+ Experience leading presentations or teaching classes.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop educational programs and complete assessment.
+ Ability to work well with people of all backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Master’s degree in Higher Education, Public Health, or related field.
+ Certified Health Education Specialist ( CHES ) or Master Certified Health Education Specialist ( MCHES ).
+ Experience working with college students in a supervisory role.
+ A working understanding of public health fundamentals and how they apply to harm reduction strategies.

+ Knowledge of issues and dynamics related to substance misuse, health risks from cannabis and alcohol use, and harm-reduction education.
