Associate Technical Director, Immunology & Tissue Typing
Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Associate Technical Director of the Immunology and Tissue Typing (aka Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics) Laboratories is a valuable member of the Department of Laboratories team. This position reports to the Administrative Director, Clinical Pathology. Medical and technical oversight of the Immunology Laboratory is provided by the Head of Clinical Immunology/Flow Cytometry and Laboratory Director. This position’s responsibilities include the administrative and technical operations of the Immunology Laboratory (comprised of the Main Immunology, Flow Cytometry & Lyme Laboratory sections). Medical and technical oversight of the Tissue Typing Laboratory is provided by the Director of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics and the Laboratory Director. This position responsibilities include administrative operations of the Tissue Typing Laboratory. This position will lead a group of technical and clerical staff including lead technologists as direct reports.
Duties of a TH Associate Technical Director, Immunology & Tissue Typing may include the following but are not limited to:
+ Maintains the Immunology & Tissue Typing Laboratory’s accreditation by compliance with all established standards, i.e. NYSDOH, CAP, ASHI, JCAHO, CLIA etc. Adheres to Corporate Compliance Plan and identifies compliance issues as per Laboratory and Corporate Compliance Plans. Oversees staff compliance with all departmental and Stony Brook University Medical Center/University Hospital Policies and Procedures.
+ In conjunction with the Laboratory Director, the Head of Clinical Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Head of Histocompatibility & Immunogenentics, and the Administrative Director of Clinical Pathology and according to SBUH established Human Resources policies and procedures, recruits and selects, promotes and demotes and schedules technical, clerical and support personnel for the Immunology and Tissue Typing Laboratories to insure the highest standards of technical excellence for the delivery of patient care services.
+ Develops and implements staff training and cross training and competency assessments as per established policies and procedures. Performance program and evaluations and competencies are performed and documented as per SBUH Human Resources policies and procedures and pertinent regulatory agencies requirements.
+ Reviews and updates policy and procedure manuals to ensure that they are current and meet regulatory requirements. Ensure that technical staff are thoroughly instructed in procedures and theory behind procedures performed in respective sections of the laboratory.
+ Ensure that all sections of the lab are stocked with sufficient quantities of necessary supplies and reagents to maintain laboratory procedures.
+ Oversees implementation and updating of tests and/or equipment working in the collaboration with Laboratory Business Manager and Laboratory IT as needed.
+ Responsible for staff timecards for Immunology and Tissue Typing Laboratories.
+ Serve as UNet Site Security Administrator for the Tissue Typing Laboratory NYSB-IT1 at Stony Brook. Duties include manage accounts, provide users access to UNet applications and complete user audits.
+ Ensures that adequate staffing levels are maintained at all times. Monitor staff productivity and adjust staff when necessary. Commit to writing detailed requirements for increased staffing (utilize staffing matrix format).
+ Ensures equipment is maintained for optimal efficiency.
+ Plans, coordinates and implements reorganization or expansion of laboratory facilities to meet the needs of changing or emerging clinical services. Collaborates with Laboratory Business Manager on reagent rental vs. buy analysis for capital equipment. Independently develops cost/benefit analysis, value analysis and revenue enhancement projects and presents to the Head of Clinical Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Head of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics and the Administrative Director, Clinical Pathology.
+ Responsible for development, implementation and monitoring of the following budgets: PSR (Personnel), S&E and Capital Equipment.
+ Responsible for annual review of CPT coding and related billing data.
+ Develops, implements and oversees the monitoring of the Quality Assurance Program, that meets the criteria established pertinent regulatory agencies. In the event of non-conformance ensures that results are not reported until corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Collaborates with the Laboratory Quality Systems Manager for Quality Assurance initiatives, Safety programs and benchmarking projects.
+ Works in collaborative manner with intra and interdepartmental teams to optimize patient testing.
+ Implementation and oversight of SBUH wide initiatives. Oversees resolution of Facilities issues.
+ Oversight of Laboratory Information System (LIS) staff training to ensure efficient workflow. Planning and coordination of LIS interface testing as well as upgrades and all other LIS projects with LIS and laboratory staff.
+ Oversees instruction of technical staff, Medical Technology students and pathology residents in the Immunology Laboratory methodologies and principles. Coordinates the Physician Assistant Student Tour in the Tissue Typing and Immunology (Main, Lyme & Flow Cytometry) lab sections. Participates in continuing education and in-service education programs within the Immunology and Tissue Typing Laboratory Departments. Participates, as appropriate, in lectures given through the School of Health Professions at Stony Brook.
+ Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of key assays/instruments/devices and reporting systems utilized in the Immunology and Tissue Typing Laboratory Departments. As assigned, hands-on involvement in assay design, testing and/or troubleshooting. May perform duties of subordinate staff during equipment failure and/or other emergencies on an as needed basis.
+ Administrative projects as assigned. As assigned, be an on-site point of contact for the Clinical Pathology Operations when the Administrative Director of Clinical Pathology is off-site and on-site assistance is needed.
+ Responsible for ordering annual proficiency testing program from Immunology and Tissue Typing Laboratories.
+ Coordinates reconciliating Reportable HIV test results with the number of test received in the NYSDOH Electronic Clinical Laboratory Reportable System (ECLRS)
+ Reviews monthly and annual tests codes and test results that are reported to NYSDOH Electronic Clinical Laboratory Reportable System (ECLRS)
+ Sends monthly listing to SBUH Finance towards invoicing the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO)-LiveOnNY for Tissue Typing Lab services provided.
+ Assists in coordination of programs to increase client base to include development of marketing tools, as assigned.
+ Represents the Immunology Laboratory Department (Main Immunology, Flow Cytometry & Lyme Laboratory sections) and the Tissue Typing Laboratory Department at the departmental and institutional committees e.g. Laboratory Safety Committee.
Qualifications
Required:
+ Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent.
+ NYSED Licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist
+ Minimum six years of Clinical Laboratory Technologist experience with a minimum two years of supervisory experience.
+ Relevant hands-on experience in Clinical Immunology and/or Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics laboratories.
+ Competency with computer applications, e.g., Microsoft Office (word, excel and Power Point)
+ Excellent interpersonal and written skills.
+ Candidate must be able to think tactically and strategically.
+ Strong analytical and organizational skills.
+ Excellent and proven problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Preferred:
+ Masters degree in healthcare administration or relevant field.
+ Experience in academic medical center hospital laboratory based setting.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position is - $116585 - $147857 / year.
The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
