Our Custodial Shop is seeking a **_Materials Handler_** who handles, pickups and transports recyclable and non-recyclable products according to the university’s recycling and trash/waste reduction program. Provides basic information regarding proper handling and removal of recyclable, trash, and waste products. Works under the direct supervision of the Recycling Coordinator or designee.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
+ Collects and removes various recyclable products, trash, and waste from exterior of buildings, and/or designated locations. Empties and relines small and large containers. Transports biohazard waste materials to designated holding areas. Keeps exterior of buildings, parking lots, garages, and docks free of recyclable products, trash and waste.
+ Labels, places, and removes recycling, trash and waste containers in designated areas as directed.
+ Instructs and answers questions from faculty and staff (including grounds and custodial staff) on what and how to sort recyclable products using designated containers on an informal and generally one-on-one basis. Utilizes general understanding of recycling conservation and trash/waste disposal.
+ Identifies and sorts recyclable products into their proper containers as required.
+ Picks up and disposes bulk recyclable, trash and waste products as requested by various members of the university.
+ Operates a truck, van or other utility vehicles and equipment (i.e., hand truck, compactors, balers, forklift, etc.) to prepare for and/or pickup recyclable, waste, and trash products on and off campus.
+ Directs recycling products and trash/waste collectors to various pickup points on campus.
+ Observes safety precautions and uses equipment properly to avoid harming self and others, and damaging property.
+ Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition after work has been completed. Reports any mechanical concerns to supervisor.
+ May assist in special events such as commencement, residence move-in or snow emergencies, and any other events as necessary.
+ May be required to be available for 24-hour calls. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
+ High school degree or equivalent preferred. Knowledge of recycling processes preferred.
+ Ability to read and write and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
+ Ability to communicate recycling information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, and students.
+ Possess an appropriate valid driver’s license with good driving record. Experience with a manual transmission preferred.
+ Ability to work in adverse weather condition when needed, i.e., snow removal.
+ Ability to work when required accommodating special needs of the university. May work occasional weekends or other shifts as required.
+ Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and courteous manner.
+ Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
+ Ability to stand, walk or otherwise move about campus on a continuous basis.
+ Ability to ascend/descend stairs on a regular basis.
_***This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period._
