Position Specific Description
NextEra Analytics is the optimization and analytics team for the world’s largest renewable energy generator. We are currently seeking a Market Optimization Engineer for our Energy Management team. This team designs, develops and benchmarks effective electricity market trading and plant dispatch strategies for utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. We are an algorithmic product team that implements automated software solutions for monetizing utility scale and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) resources. Our solutions are deployed at energy storage, wind, solar, fossil and DERMS resources operating in markets as stand-alone, hybrids, aggregations, and other market participation models. Our team thrives on solutions based on the mastery of market rules and regulations, the forecast of price and other market conditions, and the optimization of bidding and dispatch behavior. This team has proven success and is core to the NextEra 360TM Energy Management Software. There is massive opportunity for career growth and company-wide visibility of contributions in this role.
In this role, you will be interacting with asset managers, schedulers, facility operators, and risk managers to develop financial and operational algorithms/models that support trading/origination/asset optimization decisions. You will leverage your expertise in operations research and electricity market fundamentals to optimize trade support products, perform performance benchmarking and stress testing of designed products, and ensure compliance of products to market rules and power purchase agreement (PPA) requirements. You will lead product development, present technical work to varying audience, and support interactions with customers. Solid quantitative and object-oriented programming expertise is strongly sought to conduct the R&D of new product design and implementation. Strong soft skills and passion to innovate in our changing electricity market landscape is a plus.
Preferred qualifications:
+ A track record of converting novel ideas into software solutions or peer-reviewed publications
+ Prior experience in operations research techniques, machine learning/deep learning or forecasting applied to an energy domain problem
+ Strong background in electricity market fundamentals (e.g., unit commitment, economic dispatch, power flow), and market products and market participation models in one or more ISOs
+ Experience with production cost models (e.g., Dayzer, Plexos, Promod, etc.) and power flow modeling (e.g., PowerWorld, PSSE, etc.)
+ Experience in facility scheduling for at least one of the following markets: CAISO, ERCOT, SPP, MISO and/or PJM
+ Fluency in Git, Julia, and Python
Job Overview
This position is responsible for designing, developing, and benchmarking effective electricity market trading and plant dispatch strategies for utility-scale and Commercial-and-Industrial customers. Employees in this role leverage knowledge and experience in mathematical programming, predictive analytics, power systems engineering, and electricity spot market design along with the capability to software engineer the solution to leverage software platform technologies including cloud computing, distributed computing, numerical solver methods, and data storage infrastructures.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
+ Develops algorithmic product solutions for physical or virtual assets (or portfolio of assets)
+ Implements production grade mathematical code with performance benchmarking and unit testing to verify and validate outcomes
+ Determines key performance indicators for algorithmic products and contributes to monitoring and iterative product improvement
+ Prepares code documentation, technical reports, quantitative analyses, and presentation material for internal and external use
+ Supports collaborations in cross-functional workstreams
+ Performs other job-related duties as assigned

The estimated base pay for this position is $124,800.00 to $187,200.00 per year. Starting pay will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, experience, qualifications, job-related and industry knowledge and skills and education/training.
