We are searching for the best talent for **Vivarium Assistant Scientist, Environmental Enrichment** to be in **Cincinnati, Ohio.**
JOB SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the Assistant Scientist is to act as the Animal Welfare and Enrichment Coordinator within an AAALAC accredited vivarium. The Assistant Scientist will also lead internal training on Animal Behavior in support of Research and Development projects and is expected to strive for excellence in all aspects of the profession of laboratory animal science and maintain the highest standards. The Assistant Scientist will ensure compliance with all animal welfare guidelines and standards set forth by the applicable animal welfare regulations, the Guide for the Use and Care of Laboratory Animals and internal standards.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
In accordance with all applicable federal, state and local laws/regulations and Corporate Johnson & Johnson, procedures and guidelines, this position:
+ Lead for all animal enrichment and socialization activities, as well as internal training on animal welfare and behavior. This includes the following responsibilities:
+ Write and manage SOPS relevant to animal enrichment and behavioral management
+ Manage enrichment inventory and feed room inventory, including ordering
+ Critically look at studies and evaluate animal training needs
+ Assess any animal behavioral issues and create feasible solutions
+ Liaison for vivarium communications on animal welfare
+ Plan and arrange CE relevant to lab animal care on a continual basis for staff and the IACUC
+ Perform literature searches, networking and keeps up with changes or trends in the animal enrichment field
+ Create and maintain “Culture of Care” program for Preclinical
+ Back-up to the vivarium associate scientist, including assisting with animal orderings, shipments, and animal housing.
+ Demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare and the 3Rs, including providing animal care and research support in compliance with internal and external regulations and animal welfare standards.
+ Observe, record and report clinical observations on laboratory animals as applicable
+ Support research by providing support with protocol driven husbandry as applicable, including coverage for vacations/illness if required.
+ Maintain records to follow departmental SOPs, AAALAC standards, animal welfare guidelines and internal compliance regulations.
+ Communicate with veterinary staff and research investigators information on the health and well-being of research animals.
+ Adhere to company and departmental safety and occupational health policies and procedures while demonstratingproficiency in safety protocols, including wearing proper personal protective equipment.
+ Maintain compliance with all training requirements.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Regulatory Tasks
+ Participate in Federal Drug Administration (FDA) inspections in the preclinical area
+ In collaboration with the vivarium associate scientist, oversee the vivarium quality review forGood Laboratory Practice (GLP) studies.
General Business Tasks
+ Responsible for communicating business-related issues or opportunities to next management level
+ Responsible for following all Company guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental practices as applicable.
+ For those who supervise or manage a staff, responsible for ensuring that subordinates follow all Company guidelines related to Health, Safety and Environmental practices and that all resources needed to do so are available and in good condition, if applicable
+ Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures
+ Performs other duties assigned as needed
EXPERIENCE** **AND EDUCATION
+ Bachelor's degree in relevant field
+ AALAS Certificate (LAT) required
+ 5+ years of experience in animal behavior and management in laboratory, zoo or similar care.
**REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES** **,** **CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES** **and AFFILIATIONS** _*_
+ Understanding of applicable FDA, GLPs, GMPs, or equivalent/related international animal welfare guidelines, regulations, and requirements and AAALAC standards.
+ Minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience in laboratory animal field is required.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as outlook, word, excel.
+ Works under direct supervision with minimal autonomy.
+ Written and oral communication skills, teamwork with personnel within and outside the facility and follow-through on all correspondence.
+ Able to read and understand a variety of documents including protocols, including Animal Care and Use Protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, work instructions, etc.
+ Ability to perform repetitive physical activities such as pushing and pulling racks of cages, lifting, and moving water bottles, bags of feed, and bedding, reaching, stooping, and bending. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds is required.
+ Applicable vaccinations may be required for entry and work within specific laboratory and vivarium spaces.
+ This position requires the ability to work full time hours at the designated location.
+ Works weekends and holidays as assigned.
