    Overview

     

    This full-time **Psychologist** **in the University of Utah's Pain Management Center** provides psychological assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services of a clinical nature through direct patient care and consultation for patients in an outpatient / ambulatory clinic.

     

    **Department Overview:** The Pain Management Center is an outpatient clinic located south of the University of Utah Campus, in Research Park.

     

    We treat the whole person, not just the pain, body part or symptom. Our program is designed to help a person with pain become part of the treatment team and take an active role in regaining control of his or her life in spite of the pain.     Introduction to the Pain Management Center

     

    Behavioral Medicine services at Pain Management Center are provided by licensed clinical psychologists. Pain Psychologists teach patients strategies to manage or cope with pain. We know pain is complex. Pain can change activity levels, goals, stress levels, relationships, and emotions.

     

    Behavioral Medicine services start with an evaluation followed by recommendations for treatment. This may include individual and group treatment, as well as workshops.

    Evidenced-based treatments we offer include:

    * Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP)

    * Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I); in context of chronic pain

    * Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for chronic pain

    * Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills training for chronic pain management

    * Motivational Interviewing (MI) for health behavior change

    Some common goals of Behavioral Medicine treatment include:

    * Improve understanding of how the brain and body process pain

    * Understand how stress impacts pain and learn strategies to reduce stress in the body

    * Understand role of thoughts in the experience of pain

    * Learn to identify and evaluate unhelpful thoughts about pain

    * Introduce ideas for living with pain without giving up on most important parts of life

    * Learn to set meaningful goals for pain management and quality of life

    * Learn ways of integrating mindfulness into daily life

    * Understand role of mindfulness in experience of chronic pain

    This position provides psychological assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services of a clinical nature through direct patient care and consultation to hospital and Huntsman Mental Health Institute patients.

    Responsibilities

    + Evaluates patients to determine status.

    + Provides direct psychological services for hospital and/or Huntsman Mental Health Institute patients.

    + Collaborates with University and community agencies and departments to provide psychological and social services through outreach and consultation programs.

    + Develops mental health programs of a remedial, developmental, and preventive nature.

    + Trains and supervises doctoral psychology interns and externs.

    + Assists in directing or working within agency program and support areas, as assigned by director.

    + Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.

    + Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.

    + Ability to provide patient care to patients and families resistant to treatment and delivering quality care within the constraints of managed care.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications** **Required

    + Ph.D or Psy.D. degree from an APA accredited graduate program in counseling, school or clinical psychology.

    + One year experience in psychotherapy, group or family therapy within a clinical setting.

    Licenses Required

    + Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

    + Current licensure as a Psychologist in the State of Utah.

    Qualifications (Preferred)

    Preferred

     

    + Experience with hospital- based psychological practices (inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and / or outpatient).

    + Experience with individual, family, and group psychotherapy; and a variety of assessment experiences including intellectual, neuropsychological, and affective/behavioral assessment.

    + Licensed for two years or more, and experience, training, or interest in providing clinical supervision to interns and residents.

    + Completion of an APA-approved doctoral internship.
